I also think that Microsoft are pushing their Windows Search v4 which works surprisingly well. I also find the basic Search in Vista works really well too. They certainly made it easy to use: just press the Winkey and start typing the keyword or filename. Of course the problem is that it isn't restricted to file type without going into advanced options. But I find it more successful to look for an email or document than any of the Office search tools.
