Nor do I understand why. I can assure you though I use the routine regularly to send multiple attachments, sometimes as many as 10 or 12 and the only time it does not work is if I MADE A MISTAKE IN ENTERING THE PATH OR FILENAME.in the datasource from which the directory merge is created.
