There are two types of bookmarks. You can insert a bookmark at a specific point (when displayed, it looks like the letter I with serifs), or you can select text and apply a bookmark to it (in which case the bookmark is represented by gray brackets surrounding the bookmarked selection). In either case, you can then insert a cross-reference or hyperlink to that bookmark.
