Word 2007 View Source Code
Jan14 12/5/2008 10:28:04 PM
Where is the command to view the source code in Word 2007? My students have
to build web pages using Word.

Don't get me wrong but are you some kind of sadist? When it comes to
using the right tool for the job, Word 2007 is as bad as they come
when we are talking webpage design. Please consider using a different
tool for your students' sake. If you want to stay with Microsoft
products, the free Visual Web Developer (http://www.microsoft.com/
express/vwd/Default.aspx) might be of interest to you.

That said, Microsoft removed the link to the MS Script Editor from
Word 2007 so you can no longer manipulate the source directly. You can
add a preview option to the Quick Access Toolbar which displays your
page in your favorite webbrowser. There you can then view the HTML
source of your document.

To add the Web page preview to the Quick Access Toolbar, right click
on the quick access toolbar and choose "Customize Quick Access
Toolbar"
In the 'Choose Commands from' dropdown select 'All Commands' then
scroll down to the Web Page Preview choice and 'Add' it to the toolbar
list.

On a side note, Word 2007 uses a new HTML engine which does not
support the full HTML feature set (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/
library/aa338201.aspx and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa338200.aspx).
So some things written in correct HTML wouldn't show up correctly in
Word when you tried to view them.

Lol... a sadist? maybe.. I am a teacher who has to use what applications
are available to me. The students have made simple webpages for years using
Word 2003. We were finally updated to Word 2007, but couldn't find the
source code view. When I finally found it, and put it on the task bar -It is
grayed out saying that it is disabled because of it is not compatible with
my web browser. I was using firfox as a default, but switched to internet
exploer 7 thinking this would help. i still get the same message.

The above answers my question.. I will need to do something else evidently.
btw.. I personally use dreamweaver to create and maintain the school's
website, but on a limited budget I can't put it or any other html editor on
30 computers.

Thanks for all of your good answers to my dilemma.

If cost, or rather no cost, is the main consideration, review the list of HTML
editors at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_HTML_editors and try out
some of the free ones.
