Location of normal.dotm file in Office 2007
"W Wolfe" <william.wolfe[ at ]ieee.org> 11/6/2008 3:20:25 PM
I keep My Documents on E: drive and have set the Word options to find My
Documents there. When I start Word it cannot find the normal.dotm file. It
is located on the C: drive in the normal location, but Word does not access
it when starting. What is the solution?

You don't say what you have done to make Word look for your My Documents
folder on your E drive, but Word will look for Normal.dotm in your User
Templates folder (see Office Button > Word Options > Advanced tab > File
Locations button (right at the bottom)).

I have set using this menu item the location of where to look for 'My
Documents" and where to look for the User Templates; however, Word seems to
be ignoring the User Template info.

My Documents redirect works, but the User Templates does not.

How about that?

You said originally that your normal.dotm "is on the C: drive in the normal
location" and now you say that you have a different setting for User
Templates - so not "the normal location". Your normal.dotm should be in your
User templates folder.

The user template information is stored in the registry at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\General
Does the User Termplates sub key store the new location you believe you have
set?
If Options are not being correctly configured it is probable that the Word
Data key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data
is corrupt. Rename or delete it and see if that improves things.
If there is no normal.dotm in the user templates folder when you open Word
it will create one. Set Word Options >Advanced >Save to prompt you to save
the normal template on closing. Do you then get a prompt to save
normal.dotm? Is it then saved?
