BCM 2007 & Vista: Connecting over a VPN
giles 6/12/2007 11:49:02 AM
Hi,

I've set up our BCM db on SQL Server 2005 and my laptop can connect fine on
the LAN. I have also an offline db on the laptop for when I'm out of the
office. It syncs fine when I get back to the LAN.

Now I have a vpn client that enables me to connect to the office when I'm
out but the db refuses to go online, saying that it cannot connect to the
server. At the same time, Outlook is connected over the VPN just fine and I
can connect to the File shares on the same server that runs the SQL db.

Am I missing something here? I've scoured the internet for about 4 hours to
find an answer but nothing so far. I see other posts here that suggest people
have bcm working over vpn but I'm not sure if that's with 07 on Vista.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Hi Scott, you say "now having" this suggests that it was once working - is
this the case?

It was working on my old machine but after migrating to a new one it has
stopped. I'm thinking it may have to do with making sure the machine is part
of the domain that Exchange and SQL are part of or maybe the security setup
of BCM itself.

Are you the same user/password on the old and new machines?

Yes, they are identical.

One thing to do is to try isolating the problem. Is it a database
connection problem or something specific to BCM.

Can you try connecting to the database using OSQL?

Here's some additional info:

Check SQL to be sure port 5356 is open... That's been a problem before.

PROBLEM SOLVED: BCM 2007 & Vista: Connecting over a VPN
giles 6/22/2007 12:04:00 PM
Hi, the problem was that the client was getting it's DNS via the ISP at home
rather than over the VPN from the server in the office.

Solution for others with the same problem: Set your VPN Client to use DNS
and WINS servers on the LAN that you are connecting to. With the NCP VPN
client I was also able to specify the Domain that I was connecting to. This
probably helped also.

Thanks to all those that helped!!
Giles

Unfortunately I can't seem to find settings for either of those items using
the Cisco VPN client that I have. Any other ideas by anyone?
