Network Connection In A Split End Database Is Constantly Interrupted
nouveauricheinvestments[ at ]gmail.com 12/9/2008 3:55:02 PM
Hi,

I have a split database with about 60 front end users and today I have
had users get messages stating constantly that their network
connection is interrupted. I have spoke with my IT department and our
switches have not been having any problems today. What else could
cause an interruption in the database connection to the network?

What is the exact message? "Disk or Network Error"?

If so it's very likely to be hardware. Given that multiple users are
having this problem that makes it even more likely.

Is a network cable running over top of fluorescent lighting ballast?
Although why that would be happening just today is a mystery.

It says the network connection has been lost. Please close down the
access application and restart it.

It is something to that affect. We haven't gotten it since this
morning, so I'm not sure of the exact wording..this isn't the first
time it has happened though. and it's not like we are a small company
either. we have about 50 people in our IT department..they are all
MySQL people though - they don't do much with access..

Or software. There are any number of software processes, on the
server or on the workstation, that can interfere with network
throughput. That could include a virus scan that causes the
connection to time out, or it could be something running on the
server that causes it to fail to return the requested data.

Well, it could be a software problem on the server, and all users
would experience it. Or it could be a software problem on
identically-configured workstations.

Is there anything you would recommend I do to more precisely pinpoint
the origin of the problem David?

Well, it entirely depends on the nature of the problem. You need to
determine which machines it's happening to and then try to find
commonalities. There's no magic recipe.

I've recently been through this with a client running SQL Server
(and the dropped connections weren't limited to Access), and we've
never been able to pin it down -- all brand-new wiring within the
last year, all NICs replaced, two PCs replaced, one PC rebuilt from
scratch, server software reconfigured multiple times, server NIC
replaced, network switch replaced, all patch cables replaced, AV
software replaced, etc. The problems all seem to lead back to the
server itself, and it's due for retirement, so we're replacing it in
the next month or so and see if that fixes the issues. If not, well,
who knows.
