Is it possible to insert footnotes within a textbox?

I am putting parts of my documents within a textbox and like to add reference
footnotes but it does not seem to work. Is it possible?

Text boxes are in the drawing layer of the document. Use a table cell or
frame instead.

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/FtnoteSpanColumns.htm for a
workaround (the instructions are for a footnote in a column but will also
work for footnotes in text boxes).
