Ask her to select just the range of cells to be merged, copy, then paste into a new workbook. Then test linking the mail merge to that - just to see if it makes a difference.
If it does, it's probably simplest to go with a new workbook, if that's at all possible. If not, would a new worksheet in the existing workbook be an option?
