SEQ field cannot be used in header?
Peter 12/19/2008 3:16:07 PM
I get an error message (Error! Main Document Only.) when trying to use a SEQ
field in a header or footer. I have an appendix to a document that I wanted
page numbered separately from the main document. Is there a work-around?

Insert a section break before the appendix and restart page numbering; see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/PageNumbering.htm in general and
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NumberingFrontMatter.htm for this
particular type of numbering.

Suzanne has explained the correct way to do what you are asking for.

I just wanted to add that you *can* insert SEQ fields in the header (or
footer), but only with the \c switch which repeats the current SEQ number in
the text. In other words, SEQ fields have a use in headers (footers) in much
the same way as the STYLEREF field has for outline numbering.
