How can I track ealier versions of the same document?

I need to keep track of earlier versions of documents that are edited. Some
programs allow you to save them as versions. Does Word allow that? I can't
find anything one way or the other.

The simplest way is to save it with a new name every so often, as you
reach a milestone.
