You can merge directly to e-mail. If you have Acrobat you can merge as PDF to e-mail. There is an inexpensive third party mail merge add-in for Outlook from MAPILabs http://www.mapilab.com/outlook/mail_merge/ that makes merging to e-mail a breeze. Note that e-mail uses html or plain text which may not reflect the appearance of your 'letter' when the content of the letter is merged as the body of the e-mail.
