Access 2003 runtime
"Patrick Jackman" <pjackman[ at ]wimse.com> 10/27/2008 7:18:52 PM
Does anyone know if the Access 2003 runtime is available in a product other
than the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Tools for the Microsoft Office System.
That product costs $983 Canadian which is a bit expensive when all I need is
the runtime.

That is the only product, other than VSTO 2003 I think, from which you
can purchase that product. I'm surprised you can even buy it.

One alternative might be to purchase an MDSN subscription which has
the rights to download MS software. I think it is still available for
download. However this may be considerably more expensive.

Might be easier/cheaper to buy full version on sale depending on how many
you need.

We're currently using the 2002 runtime and I'm finding it has a few quirks.
I've heard 2003 is more stable so I am investigating costs. We have about 20
users so the runtime is the cheapest route.

Patrick.

Thanks for the info Tony.

An MSDN subscription would cost at least twice the price I've been quoted by
Programmer's Paradise Canada for VSTO 2005.

Now we have to answer whether 2003 is that much more stable than 2002 to
justify the cost of upgrading.

Any thoughts?

Patrick.

I don't know about stable as I haven't used A2002 for a while. A2000
is quite stable for some of my clients so I would suspect A2002 is as
well. The only features in A2003 that I find are different are for
developers. (That said most of my databases would work quite will in
A97 with very few changes required.)

So I would say don't bother to upgrade from A2002 runtime to A2003
runtime.

Also note that you have to do a special step to upgrade the A2003
runtime to SP3. The A2003 runtime is not part of Microsoft update
whereas I think the A2002 runtime is.

Re: Access 2003 runtime

The most annoying is a form's disappearing custom context menu. At runtime
it's suddenly not there and any calls to it generate errors. The application
has to be replaced with a fresh version. Here's what that looks like in my
error log:
C 5.3.14.08 07/11/08 16:47:52 cpoirier.CREDITEH; frmLoanEdit.cbfCbrSet ALIS;
Err 5 - Invalid procedure call or argument Erl=448 Status=8; fmnuMENU;
frmSearchCredit; frmSearchFax; frmFaxInEdit; frmLoanEdit; ; ActiveControl:
EntityID; PreviousControl: subEntity; ActiveForm: frmFaxInEdit

Here are a few more error log entries: Memory leak?
C 5.3.15 b6 10/16/08 16:37:55 rhenry.CREDITRH; basMedicardEDoc.XMLEDocView
ALIS; Err 2052 - There isn't enough free memory to update the display. Close
unneeded programs and try again. ; ActiveControl: txtAccountName;
PreviousControl: txtAccountBalance; ActiveForm: frmApplicationApproval

C 5.3.14.08 07/04/08 10:48:14 smooroogiah.SHYNEENEW; basMedicardMRU.MRUSave
ALIS; Err 2118 - You must save the current field before you run the Requery
action. ; ActiveControl: lstMRU; PreviousControl: tabProvider; ActiveForm:
frmMRU

Lots of things that work all of the time but then suddenly get wonky.

Patrick.

Impressive. I don't recall seeing any such problems posted to the
newsgroups specific to A2002. Most of the similar problems that I can
recall were encountered by developers. Now I never got around to
using A2002 myself much. I went from A2000 to A2003 directly.

Is this happening at all sites or just some sites? I'm wondering if
Norton Antivirus is involved. It seems rather troublesome at times.

Hi,
(looks like this message was not posted, posting again)

if you hide/show commandbar controls at runtime - this can be a source of
first error message - hidden control disappears after compact. The same
thing happens in 2003
Anyway - you need to find first what happens exactly

memory error - I also have it sometimes in 2003. So try to check that these
error really gone in 2003 before purchasing it

Yes, I had many problems with the update and ended up uninstalling the ATI
drivers and using the standard windows drivers. Crashes with video, and
office applications stopped afterwards. As a matter of fact, I haven't' had
a single one since getting rid of the ATI drivers. I have a ATI All in
wonder.

Now that happening within Access is very bizarre. And I really can't
see that being Access's fault. The Date function really returns data
from the OS.

Where the problem really could be though I have no idea.

Thanks for sharing your observations Alex.

I'll see if I hide any command bar controls. I think I only disable them.
And I'll have to see if users compact their own databases; I don't think
they do. But that's a great clue. Thanks.

I'm troubled to read you also have memory errors with 2003.

Hi,
(looks like this message was not posted, posting again)

if you hide/show commandbar controls at runtime - this can be a source of
first error message - hidden control disappears after compact. The same
thing happens in 2003
Anyway - you need to find first what happens exactly

memory error - I also have it sometimes in 2003. So try to check that these
error really gone in 2003 before purchasing it

Actually this was to the controls disappearing portion of the thread. I
must of fat fingered the mouse or something to have it come up in the date
part.

RE: Access 2003 runtime

Hi Patrick,

How about Access 2007 Runtime, which is free at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=D9AE78D9-9DC6-4B38-9FA6-2C745A175AED&displaylang=en
for the English version. Or you can choose another language from there. It
does work with earlier database versions.
