Are you using a right to left language? The paragraph symbol marks the end of a paragraph. It is always present whether or not you display it. You can toggle the display with the ¶ button or CTRL+* . You can determine which formatting characters this command hides from tools > options > view > formatting marks (or its equivalent in Word 2007). Whether displayed or not it should not affect the spell check and you can search for it with ^p or with the wildcard option set ^13
