Moving BCM Database to new SQL 2005 Server
Mark 11/2/2008 10:27:01 PM
I have installed SBS Server 2003 Premium which has MS SQL 2005. Using the
BCM toolkit for Outlook 2007 I created new database. The client Outlook 2007
can access the empty database fine. If I add a contact it appears fine.

I then used the same utility to backup the database on the old server, move
the backup to the new server and then again using the tool did a restore.
The restore completed successfully. I can actually browse the database using
the "SQL Server Manager" and can see the restored contacts. When I access
the BCM from the client Outlook 2007 I do not see any of the contacts. I
have again used the tool to share the database and find the user in the list.
I can't seem to access the old contacts.

Any suggestions?

Is the BCM database on the new server empty of all data, or just
missing Contacts?

I initially did a create database using the BCM toolkit and established
connection with the client workstation. I did connect to the database and
had added a contact and all looked good. I then using the BCM Toolkit backed
up the database on the old server and again using the Toolkit, restored that
datase backup. As I stated earlier, I am able to see contact records in the
database.

To clarify, I can see the contacts in the database using SQL Management
studio by browins the database directly. I cannot see the contacts from
within BCN on the client workstation.

If you add a contact with BCM, do you see it with Sql Mgtm Studio?

The issue has been resolved. The problem turns out that you cannot just do a
backup on the old server and restore the database to the new server. Even
though I do have the same logins in active directory, the user security
restored to the new database was not valid. If I tried to remove a users
security for the database using MS SQL Management Studio, it reported that
the user was not a valid user on the machine.

To make a long story short, the way to accomplish this is to export the data
to the BCM format, then import that information into the new blank database.
Use the Outlook BCM Toolkit to then "Share" the database and setup the users.
