If I click '?' I get the main menu, and if I then double click an item on that menu, it goes faint, the circle starts revolving and, at the top after 'Word help' appears '(Not responding)' and nothing further happens. How can I cure this? -- Nick

Have you tried diagnosing/repairing the installation? Assuming that you are using Word 2007, click the Office button and then click Word Options. In the Resources category, click the Diagnose button.

Thank you for your rapid response.
I have followed your instructions and no faults have been diagnosed.
I have now looked a bit further and help is working perfectly for Excel, but the same fault is present on Powerpoint and Onenote.
If you double click on a subject in the first menu, it is outlined in black and nothing happens, if you then double click again, the 'Not responding' message comes up, the revolving circle appears and the menu goes faint.
I cannot remember for sure but I think that this is the first time that I have had to use help in Word. -- Nick

What happens if you start Word in Safe mode (hold the Ctrl key as you start the application)? Does it work correctly then?

No, exactly the same result. I have tried one other thing, - I have uninstalled Office and re-installed it, still exactly the same! Nick

Reinstalling usually doesn't help with these issues (as you've noticed). For general troubleshooting, see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm.
