the backspace key is removing several words instead of one letter

I think the fault may be in my keyboard, but I'm not sure. The forward slash
key was repeating with only one click, but that has stopped. help please and
thank you.

I agree that the keyboard is probably the cause, but there's something else you
can easily check first.

In the Windows Control Panel, open the Keyboard icon. Make sure the repeat delay
and repeat rate settings are somewhere in the middle of their ranges.

If that doesn't help, borrow someone else's keyboard to see whether that fixes
it. If so, a new keyboard won't be expensive. I recommend www.newegg.com.
