Not in Word, regular text - even in a shape - can't be treated as an object, but what you can do is...
Select the Text Box then access the Format Text Box options & check the box for Resize AutoShape to Fit Text. The box will resize automatically [pretty much] based on the formatting of the text within. That "may" suit your need. Note that if you later stretch the box the check will be removed.
