Assuming that this has nothing to do with Word being an expired trial version and that the program has been activated, it is probably attributable to a minor corruption in the Word data key in the registry - see http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm then http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm.
The data key in question is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data Delete or rename (OldData) this key and Word will build a new one -- <>>< ><<> ><<> <>>< ><<> <>>< <>><<> Graham Mayor - Word MVP
