Access 97 runtime install under Vista
gary k 12/11/2008 5:07:02 PM
When trying to install an access 97 run-time application on a customer's
Vista machine, I get the following error message: oleaut32 support file was
unable to register itself in the system registry

Office 2000 (including access 2000 - version 9.0) has previously been
installed on this computer. Note - before attempting to install the access
97 run-time, I renamed (the access 2000 version) msaccess.exe.

Any suggestions on how to successfully install the run-time app? My
application has been successfully installed on other customer's Vista
machines, but not being familiar with Vista I do not know the differences in
the environments.

As far as I know, the Access 97 runtime is not supported on Vista and if you
have gotten it to work on other Vista machines I would count that as lucky.
I don't think it was good to rename the Access executable. You would likely
need to uninstall Office 2000 prior to installing the 97 runtime, but I also
think that I remember seeing that Office 2000 isn't officially supported on
Vista either.

Hi Gary,

Access 97 is over 11 years old--time to upgrade. You may want to try
installing the Access 2007 Runtime, which is free from Micrsoft.

Does your app work? OLEAUT32 is a common system DLL that has almost
certainly been superseded many times. So I wouldn't worry to much
about it.
