Inking Issue on Desktop
Erik Gulbrandsen <erik_gulbrandsen_bogus_email[ at ]bogusaddress.com> 2/6/2007 3:34:11 AM
Remember my inking issue on desktop? Well, my tablet is on the fritz
and I need to use my desktop to take notes. Everything, just out of the
blue, was working fine again (no large note containers). SO, I thought
all would work well. I uninstalled the 2007 trial and then installed
the enterprise edition of office 2007 (with active key). Now, all "pen"
tools are greyed out. No highlighters and no pens. It makes
highlighting pictures impossible. Any ideas?

I'm using XP SP2 with all the updates (except for a couple of .net
frameworks and the latest windows media player).

A system reboot solved my problem, for those that are interested...

p.s. the large note containers stopped happening upon uninstalling my
other office suites (I had 2007 student trial, 2007 OneNote trial, 2007
Office Pro).

Guess what? My inking problem was inking problem was fixed (as were the
note containers). However, about 10 min. after I posted the "fixed" on
the forums, OneNote started crashing, about every 10 seconds! I did
everything I could think of, but, I just reverted to reloading the image
of my OS (since it takes no more than an hour).

Now, I can ink, however, my highlighting is placed in one big container
(just like my previous problem). This is hugely problematic, as tags
and audio syncing is placed midway through the container, which happens
to be the entire size of my powerpoint printout!

Watch a 1 minute video of the problem here:

any ideas?

Interesting. Thanks for posting the video, that helps a lot.

So how are you making your selections of the ink? If you hit ctrl-A to
select all, then you'll see the different ink highlight objects selected as
individual ink strokes. If you drag a selection rectangle around all of
them, or select them all with the lasso, they get merged together into one
selection container to make them easier to move/resize/etc. If this is what
is happening, then this is by design. If you are creating the selections in
some other way, then please let me know.

I wish I had recorded audio with the video...I hit CTRL-A, which should
select all containers as well as individual containers by themselves (as
you stated). If you watch the video, this is EXACTLY what I was trying
to show. Hitting CTRL-A shows that all the inking is strictly in one
note container (no pun intended--that literally just came out). So,
there is definitely something wrong.

Lemme know what you find out...I'm really curious.

I think I know what is going on here. When you first create the strokes (try
this again on a new page), then hit ctrl-A, you should see them select in
different containers. Then, drag a rectangular selection (marquee) around
them all, and they will select in one container. Then clear the selection,
add text or whatever, then hit ctrl-A until the strokes are selected again.
We remember that you selected them together before, and we select them
together again. This is really a side effect of the temporary marquee
grouping, which I am guessing was simpler to just persist. But they aren't
strictly grouped, you can marquee around a subset again to select just the
ones you want. I can see how this is unpredictable, and harmful in your
scenario. Thanks for this feedback, it really helps to see how small things
like this can affect real users like you. To avoid this (until we can fix
it), try not to select them all together with the marquee.

Alex,

that is what the video was meant to show--the strokes DON'T show up in
seperate containers. The video was meant to show nothing more. I was
hitting CTRL-A to show you that all strokes were contained within one
note container.

Everything else you wrote is not relevant to the situation (although I
bet there is a user out there that wants this). I appreciate your
reply. What I need help with is the fact that my strokes are all
contained within one container. This means that my audio syncing is
just ruined. I will have one sync point associated with all of my
inking, since all inking is contained within one container.

let me know what you think. If you would like to do a remote management
session, that can be worked out easily (I've done one before with Olya).
