Unfortunately, this problem seems to be worse in Excel 2007.
If you are just trying to do the merge yourself, I suggest you select the data in Excel and copy/paste into a Word document and use that as the data source. You may have to paste->special if you have more columns than the maximum number of columns in a Word table.
If you are trying to set up the merge for other people to use, things are not so simple.
