Thread: Turn off the warning when you open a local file in Onenote 2007?

Turn off the warning when you open a local file in Onenote 2007?
Simon Lacoste-Julien 6/30/2006 10:16:02 PM
I'm trying out OneNote 2007 Beta 2 and I love that you can instert hyperlinks
between notes. However, I also often link to files on my computer (I maintain
a large folder hierarchy of research papers in pdf organized by topics) which
are often edited (so I just don't want to insert a local copy in OneNote). As
in Onenote 2003, there is still the annoying warning message which warns you
of security concerns when you click on the link (and unlike with most
warnings of this kind, there is no 'do not show this message again' box). I
read on
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.onenote/browse_frm/thread/a55cca4952869802/
that there was a registry trick to turn this warning off for OneNote 2003
(see KB829072). How can I do it for OneNote 2007?

For reference, here is the warning message:
"Microsoft Office OneNote Security Notice

This location may be unsafe.
File Path: C:(...).pdf
Hyperlinks can be harmful to your computer and data. To protect your
computer, click only those hyperlinks from trusted sources.

Do you want to continue?"

Yes I want to continue, and now that you have warned me and that I am aware
of the threat, just don't bother me again with it! Why haven't they just put
a 'don't show this message again' option is beyond my understanding!

Thanks for helping,

Simon

Hi Simon,

You should go on connect.microsoft.com and submit this feedback there
via the OneNote 2007 Beta site.

So I understand that there is no known way right now to do that and that I
should do a feature suggestion about it?

Can try following:
(1) Close OneNote
(2) Copy/Paste following to NotePad (or any ASCII text editor)
===============================
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Security]
"DisableHyperlinkWarning"=dword:00000001
==================================
save with a .reg extension (use any name to reflect what what it's for)
close file
(3) Then, double-click the saved *.reg to merge it into the registry.

Has anyone used jw's suggestion? I hate the security warning, but I am not
one who should be fooling with the registry without an engineer holding my
hand.

If this has been successful for others, I'd like to try it.

Yes I tried it and it has not helped. I have isolated the problem (at least
for me) is using the "copy hyperlink to this paragraph" feature in One Note
and pasting it in Excel. When I use the link in Excel I still get the
warning. If I use links in Excel that I create in Excel to link to other
Office programs, Word for example, I do not get the warning. Have you
resolved this problem?

Thanks for letting me know that it didn't work for you. I still have the
problem, but I don't see many others complaining about it. The links I am
using are created in OneNote for files on the disk. They are not all
identified with the same program. Some were originally created in Excel,
some in Word, etc.

What ? everyone complains about the hyperlinks.
:)

Re: Turn off the warning when you open a local file in Onenote 200
Simon Lacoste-Julien 6/28/2007 7:10:03 PM
I have tried it with complete success in my case! No more annoying warning
message when I click on a local file link!

I didn't even have to create another key in the OneNote hierarchy, I simply
added the key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Security]
"DisableHyperlinkWarning"=dword:00000001

like was suggested by JW.

Thanks so much JW! You were a lot more helpful than anybody at Microsoft,
who claimed in my feedback report
https://connect.microsoft.com/onenote/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=153135
that the ability to turn off the warning would be included in the final
OneNote 2007 version. But after getting the final version and seeing that
nothing seemed to have been changed on this regard, they never replied to my
further request for clarification.
