Add my name to the list with this problem. I am having trouble doing any type of troubleshooting when it doesn't get very far in the installation. "Do you wish to proceed with the installation?" - (Yes or No button) (Selected Yes) - "Extracting files, please wait..." (then) "The installation of this package failed." -(OK button) (Selected OK) - Installation ended.
Many attempts. No variation. Have Office XP Media Center edition. Have AV (Norton), Firewall (Zone Alarm Professional), Antispyware (Windows Defender). Everything was updated and easily exceed all resource requirements.
I would love to test this, but I guess I have to wait for help on how to install it.

The notice that appeared prior to your downloading the beta states: "Beta code is offered "as is", and does NOT include technical support."

Hi JayKay,
Are you using Windows XP Media Center Edition?
See if these steps help,
Assuming this is the first 2007 Office product you're installing, and you're installing on a version of Windows XP (which includes Media Center)
=========== 1. Use Start=>Programs=>Accessories=>Disk Cleanup clear your Internet files and temp files.
2. Locate your 2007 Office Professional Beta 2 download file and note the folder/path location.
3. Create a new folder on your PC and note that folder/path location.
4. Use Start=>Run , and on a single line type in the following (using the path & file names from Step 2 & 3) and leaving out the brackets
"drive:\Step2PathOfDownload\downloadfilename.exe" /extract:"Step3path"
example: (assuming you saved to a 'downloads' folder and created a new folder named Off2007ProB2CD1) the Start=>Run line would look like this
"c:\downloads\OPPLUS-EN.EXE" /extract:"C:\Off2007ProB2CD1"
If the extraction is successful (you'll get a dialog box telling you it was after a few minutes) then
a. Backup your files and shutdown all other running apps and utilities including antivirus. b. Run setup from your new 2007 Office system folder you created in the previous steps
Else, if the extraction doesn't succeed then the download may be damaged/corrupted. Use Start=>Run and type %temp% and locate the Setup-xxxxx.log (file) just created and see if it has any clues on where the extraction failed.
Post back with the results please.

I tried cleaning up my computer by cleaning up my temp files, recycle bin... This did not seem to work. I redownloaded the installation file and it worked fine! I am in and reviewing the Beta software.

Some more info for you. Experiencing exactly the same thing here.
If i manually extract, it fails in the same way at the same point as the execuatble launch.
If i burn the executable to CD and run, it installs fine.
After seeing this i dug out the old XPSP2.exe file to test the extraction, and this failed half way though. To be safe i did the same process (from the SP2 CD, not the HDD) and it extracted fine.
Unfortunately, the process of extraction doesn't seem to generate any error log's in the %temp% dir, only setup error's.
p.s. I'm not using MCE, im on XP Home with a VIA VT8237R chipset and a SATA HDD. I don't believe this problem existed (or atleast it wasn't reported) with an IDE drive in the system, but i'm just about to ghost back to an IDE drive to test this theory.

And another update.....
We took all the components from the offending system to different make of board (still VT8237R) and had exactly the same issue. We re-installed again....had the same issue. We changed the CPU from an intel 6XX series to a 5XX series and installed, now it all works fine. Put the 6XX series back into the system installed with a 5XX CPU and it still works fine.
Hopefully that's a bit of 'food for thought' for you all...

JoAnn, I believe we all know there is no actual tech support for beta software, but dont you think it would be prudent to at least offer a little asistance rather than a put down to those trying to help find the bugs? I am having the exact same problem and I am using the beta 2 version of Vista. I am a 30 year "veteran" working with computers & I could sure use a little help figuring this one out. -- If you can read this, thank a teacher. Since you are reading it in English, thank a Soldier.

My point was that everyone is forewarned that they are on their own if they opt to run the beta. If someone in the MS newsgroups can help, great. But there's no guarantee that anyone can provide any advice. --

And my point is that as a representative of Microsoft, you need to remember that you catch a lot more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. That kind of condecending remark will help no one. I saw another one of your "like responses in another thread and the two together tells me you are in serious need on an attitude adjustment. Microsoft MVPs are not employees of the company; indeed, they must give up their MVP designation if they accept employment with Microsoft.
As such, we do NOT represent Microsoft, their views, or the fitness of their software for specific purposes.
Read the archives of this group and others if you have any questions.
Microsoft lackeys we are not - and you would find many MVPs who will give them "what for" when they mess up, which they do, on many occasions, me among them.
However, user stupidity, lack of thoughtfulness, inability to understand "beta" or any other user error also gets the same treatment.
Caveat Emptor - would that be a better label for Beta software? Except, folks think they are getting a free Microsoft Office suite to use for a few months and can't resist the temptation, DON'T read the warnings, and install it thinking that it will work perfectly and can be uninstalled as the "normal" program can.
Tell me, how is anyone going to bang this into anyone's head when Google mail, toolbar, etc. have been in perpetual beta and lull people into thinking that beta software works perfectly for their production environments.
If you want to blame anyone, blame the perpetual Google betas for diluting the meaning of "beta."

And there are several MVPs who are not very happy that everyone and his dog is downloading the beta without taking the warnings seriously.

As I said, I do not suffer fools. People who install beta software and expect the same level of performance and stability as a released product are fools.
And I make no apologies.
Ask for assistance on any other Outlook problem, I am happy to help.

I will also agree that there are serious installation issues: I have just bought (10 EUR) the full 2007 package on DVD. No matter how many times I tried, it has been impossible to install either 2007 OFFICE or parts of it, for that matter...Installation may fail without explanation or - as it has been the case with VISIO - the installer is unable to find some necessary files. I already gave up...

That's definitely not a helpful post, as most of us clearly know the beta contingencies of "no tech support/as is." Repeating the beta terms of usage to users who are just trying to figure out how to install the product to begin with only fuels the fire of frustration.
Clearly, if so many people are having problems with the installation alone of this product, the signs of what's to come ahead if actually using the beta product seem grim to me. Maybe a new beta 3 version will appear soon correcting this problem.

And that's why a lot of us have no intention of getting Office 2007 until it's been released and patched a couple of times. We already know there are going to be problems - there always are.

There may or may not be another public beta release. Typically, with prior betas, there is only one public release and all others are made available to the technical testers. Microsoft has not made any announcements about this, one way or the other.

Choosing "upgrade" from Office 2007 rather than "full installation" finally worked for me. Before that, I kept getting the freeze that most people described once the "installing Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 (beta)" prompt appeared and froze.
If you don't have any previous editions of Office, maybe downloading a try-out version of an older version could work, then upgrading to 2007 from that?
Another option to potentially try is doing the "full installation" method of 2007 and only choose one or two components (i.e. Word or PowerPoint only) and leaving out all of the extra tools, or not selecting "Run all of this from my computer" versus "Run on first use of this program" etc. But ei

No. it isn't. You just talked yourself into thinking you had done it. Your behavior as a representative of Microsoft is disgraceful. You should consider another line of work.

For those of you who had this problem, I have found a solution which worked for me. My error code was 1610, which was an error having to do with msienumproducts. I found this method on Microsoft TechNet as a workaround for a different installation error (1706):
Solved! it's not the right way but until we have an official answer.. unpack OPPLUS-EN.exe with winrar and execute OfficeMUI.msi, then exec ProWW.msi .. and you'll have a default office install in default 'program files' folder..
The link to the forum page itself is:

I'm new to this group, but I do want to say that I did receive a reply from a very helpful MS MVP. Having read the previous posts in this thread, it's pretty shocking that any real MVP would answer in the way that some have done here. The lesson is that there is help available, both in this forum, and from the experts directly.
David
edit: if some programs don't work, exec their msi .. ex: ExcelMUI.msi etc...

I had similar problems with install errors and searched in vain. Finally, here's what I did:
- uninstalled ALL versions of Office, office updates, etc. - ran a registry cleaner (I used RegSupreme and ran a deep scan), and deleted al the crap. - used the MS INstaller Cleanup Utility to verify no Office stuff was in there (if there were I would have deleted them).
And it stil did not work. But I found an entry in the setup.log that gave me a few clues. When I ran some ot the stuff I foud there, the following popped up and COMPLETELY solved the problem. Here is is (my apologies to the original poster as I don;t know who you are, I didn't copy your name but I owe you great debt of thanks...):
Start…Run…Regedit Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Delivery\SourceEngine\Downloads delete the following keys:
{30120000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C {30120000-0015-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C {30120000-0016-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C {30120000-0018-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C {30120000-0019-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C {30120000-001A-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C {30120000-001B-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C {30120000-0044-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C {30120000-006E-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C
Each of the GUIDs above correspond to a different office 2007 app, and office 2007 itself.
Here is why you could not reinstall: The error was being caused by the LIS (local installation source) not being where the registry said it should be. The actual error (HResult: 0x80070002) means that the installer could not find the files. If you delete the references to them in the registry then the installer will not look for cached copies in the LIS during installation and you will be able to push through with no problems.
Seems like the installer will glitch from time to time and leave these entries behind. When the files from MSOcache are removed by the installer and you try to reinstall, the installer is trying to load the cached files it thinks exists. Because they do not exist, the installer throws an exception.
“Catalyst execution finished: 06/01/2006 19:49:58. Return code: 0. Exception caught: HResultOnly.â€
And you get the friendly “An error occurred during the installation and Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 (Beta) setup was unable to complete.†Error message.

JoAnne is "just" and MVP Microsoft "publisher" which means.... she knows how to turn on a computer, go to the internet, and type words, phrases, sentences and paragrapghs. Perhaps maybe an interesting article, but calls the "Geek Squad" for everything else.
Good Day

I also know how to spell properly, use fairly decent English, and don't respond to posts that are three months old. Perhaps I could teach you a thing or two....or perhaps not. It's impossible to teach those who will not learn.

Ok, JoAnn, it's obvious that you are just a rude troll, so maybe you
need someone to point out some things that are obvious to most people
of at least average intelligence or better.
1) Internet forums are for sharing information and learning from other
people. Just because Microsoft doesn't provide support for a beta
product, doesn't mean that people should have any hesitation about
posting here to try to solve a problem. These forums aren't on
Microsoft.com, people aren't asking Microsoft for help, so just
freaking shut up about that. Let people try to figure out the problems
and solve them.
2) There is no reason that someone can't respond to a post that's 3
months old. If the information is still relevant, then there is good
reason to post and ask questions and try to resolve the problem. If
you have a problem with that, that's fine, but please troll somewhere
else
3) MVP isn't really that impressive of a title. It isn't that hard to
get, and publisher really isn't that tough of a product. If you had a
hard to earn cert, then I'd be a little more impressed. When I saw you
were putting your MVP for publisher on your sig, I really did laugh out
loud. If that's the only claim to fame I had, I'd be embarrassed.
4) This particular issue is continuing to occur even though the product
isn't in beta any more, and information posted in the thread has some
good information (minus your rants that detract). Although the post
was started 3 months ago, it still has relevant information and this
thread still comes up on google on the first page when searching for
the article. When I used the keywords Office 2007 "the installation of
this package failed", this was the second result. I just found them
today and had to weed through all your crappy posts, so even though you
were trolling months ago, this was my first exposure to the thread. The
internet stays around a lot, and just because you posted 3 months ago
doesn't mean that everyone else saw it at that time. You need to
smarten up about that and get off your high horse, and realize that
what you see as intellectual insults are just making you look plain
stupid. You are probably the only person that thought it was funny
when you insulted another poster asking them why it took them 3 months
to respond. everyone else was smart enough to realize that the person
just found the boards.
With that in mind, thank you everyone that has contributed useful
information. This thread has given me some good starting points,
although so far I haven't found a solution in here that works. I'm
going to try to do the manual extraction that was suggested though
since I haven't done it yet.
I'm trying to install the Office 2007 pro from the Launch 2007 event,
and it has the exact same issue many of you have been having.
And Joann, get a life. Despite your comments, I really doubt you could
teach anyone a thing or two about anything but trolling, although even
as a troll you are only mediocre. I've seen many trolls that are much
better. Get yourself some better certs or titles you can use besides
MVP for Publisher as well.

Jo Ann was correct and she was not rude at all. You do not post or attach to a 3 month old one. Start a new one and explain you issues properly. I do not see your old post that you are referring too since it is long gone from my server.
If you need some help then you explain your issue correctly and in as much detail as possible. I also would have given you a very similar response.
Now if you care to explain your issue maybe someone or myself can help or put you on the right track to getting your issue fixed which we still do not know what it is.

Maybe these forums are different than most I've been to, but it doesn't
make sense to make a new post when there is useful information in the
past post that then can end up being duplicated and which leaves two
posts that people have to search through instead of just one.
In addition, this post is the one that google is finding, so when
solutions are found, having a solution here means people will find
their answer, whereas a new post won't come up yet on google, and hence
people are less likely to find it.
I completely disagree about Joanne being rude. Her tone came across
very snobbish and elitist and provided only condescension and no useful
information. Telling someone "or perhaps not. It's impossible to teach
those who will not learn." comes across rude to me, and I'm not even the one she addressed
the comment to. I could go back and post other comments she made that
were just as rude or worse, but it's not worth wasting the time.
Regardless, people came here asking questions and rather than answer
questions, she told people that it's unsupported. Although that is
true, the attitude totally defeats the purpose of the forum. What if
everyone took that attitude all the time? These would be very useless
forums. The extension of that attitude would be that if it's
unsupported, people shouldn't be posting and asking, but that if a
product IS supported, that they should go through proper channels of
support rather than post here. Hence the boards become totally
unneeded and unnecessary as people go elsewhere to get their questions
answered.
My feeling would be that someone should either contribute to the posts
and try to help, or else just shut up. Honestly, what is the point of
telling someone the product is unsupported? Everyone knows that, and
that's why they are here instead of Microsoft's site.
I do appreciate your offers of help. I have figured out the solution
for my issue however, so it's not needed. :) Your approach is
significantly better than Joann's approach of just telling people it's
not supported. Thanks.
As far as the solution, I found a few pieces of information to add to
this post. I did find that my problem was that that the file was
incomplete. Even though it appeared to complete properly, when I
checked the file sizes, it was only 1/2 the size it should have been.
It won't tell you the file is incomplete, it just fails during install.
I'm pretty sure this is the reason that one poster said that when he
redownloaded Office that it worked.
One additional thing I found that causes some people problems on other
forums is that the error can occur if you don't have the Windows
Installer 3.1 installed.
