You can create your own custom styles as desired, though in many cases it is preferable to use the built-in styles (see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/UseBuiltInHeadingStyles.html). In Word 2002 and 2003, you can select exactly which styles you want displayed (using the Custom setting in the Styles and Formatting task pane). In Word 2003, through formatting protection, you can also limit which styles can be used. In Word 2000 and earlier, the Styles list displays "styles in use." By default, these styles include Normal, Default Paragraph Font, and Headings 1-3. As other styles are used, they are added. Unused styles can be removed through the Format | Styles dialog. Display "Styles in use," select an unwanted style, and press Delete. In Word 2003, in the Styles & Formatting task pane, choose Show: Custom, which will open the Format Settings dialog. Click on Styles... and choose "Styles in use." You will be able to delete all the styles except Normal, Default Paragraph Font, and any Headings that are displayed (Headings 1-3 by default). The styles aren't really deleted; they are just reset to their default (out-of-the-box) Normal.dot settings, and they are no longer displayed as "in use." Beyond that, you use the Format Settings dialog to determine which styles you want to be displayed as "Available." -- Suzanne S.
