I can't open any Word files, it tells me they are "unavailable".
chichama 1/28/2006 2:58:27 AM
I've rebooted.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled my Microsoft Software.

I've checked for viruses and spyware.

I created a new document, saved and closed it, then tried to open it, and
again got the message that the file is unavailable.

I just used these files yesterday!

If you're using Symantec/Norton AntiVirus, try disabling the
Office Plugin that comes with it. See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 "How to use Office
programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in" for more
information.

This is great information, thank you so much.

However when I tried to do this, it will not let me open Norton. I even
tried just to uninstall it, but it won't let me. Any suggestions for this?

When I try to remove the norton, it tells me it can't access all
users/desktop. I also don't have NAV in my system tray.

You're not trying to remove Norton AntiVirus, just disable the Office
Plug-in.

I couldn't get into Word and have school papers to write so I just ended up
reformatting and don't plan to install Norton again.

Suzanne - I realize that, but I couldn't get Norton to open so that I could
follow garfield's original advice. That's when I tried to uninstall it, but
it wouldn't let me even do that.

Thanks so much for your help, both of you, but I had a huge time constraint
that made me have to get drastic. I will definitely come back to this site
again if I need help.

I had downloaded a trial of norton, all hell has broke loose. I am not even
sure what it did. but beware it is a real kicker. I will never use it again.
I am still trying to get my computer to function normally. It has been six
days. My word files wont open either. I am not computer literate so am
stumbling around but it looks like this thread is right down my alley thanks.
