No Dialtone when send/receive fax
I'm using Windows XP SP2. Had configured the FAX printer and checked the modem's working properly in the Device Manager. However, everytime I sent a doc, it returned an error message of "No diatone detect" and it couldn't initiate the call. I couldn't receive fax as it couldn't detect the ringing tone of the line. Any clue on this problem? Does it related to the firewall setup as it's ena...

Cannot use Add Printer Wizard
All of my printers are gone in Printers and Faxes, and I cannot add a printer, using the wizard. When I click on it, nothing happens. I checked the windows directory for any foreign .dll's, but they are only the 3 windows dll's. The spool directory looks normal. I can print from the office suite, but not from IE. The printers show up in those programs. Any ideas besides reloading X...

Choosing a port to print
Normally, you specify a name of printer to open when start printing. The printer is a printer driver + port. Sysadmin is allowed to change the ports for existing printers, yeilding new print configurations. It would be great to create those configurations temporaryly-dynamically at runtime not affecting the static configurations. For instance, instead printer name you specify the full pa...

XP users cannot connect to printers
XP SP2 users cannot connect to printers. They receive the following error message, which at first led me to believe the issue was with the Point and Print GPO: "A policy is in effect on your computer which prevents you from connecting to this print queue. Please contact your system administrator." -Print server W2K3 SP1 is in the same domain, also a DC. -Point and Print GPO is disable...

Hello Can anybody advise about the following: I'm starting to come across users on the network I help maintain who have had their default printer automatically reassigned to something (normally to the 'Microsoft Office Document Image Writer') other than their normal HP printer in Windows XP. Minor fax setting change I'd like to make
I'm using Windows XP SP2 on a desktop computer. I fax documents fairly often, but rarely use a cover letter. Yet when the Microsoft Fax Console launches and prepares to send my fax, the option to 'Send a Cover Letter' is always selected. Removing the check mark is simple enough, but is there a setting I can change so that it is not selected by default? ...

Capture printing to file
By setting up a generic printer with a port of e.g. \temp.prn I can redirect LPT1 to that file (temp.prn). However, what I would like is all printing to be appended to the file. Whenever I send something new to be printed the old temp.prn file is replaced with the new output. Any suggestions. FYI: I had been using the program PRN2FILE on my XP machines but for some reason that has co...

Long delays in printing.
We are running two Dell desktops, and one Dell laptop on a wireless home network. All three are running XP2. The router is a Linksys. The printer is an Epson 870 photo printer. When we attempt to print from any of these we get extremely long delays, if it prints at all. Sometimes it may be an hour or two before it mysteriously will bless us. At other times it may be the next day or two. On...

Map lpt1 to a network printer as a restricted user
Last year we applied SP2 to our XP workstations. We think that "broke" restricted users' ability to "map" lpt1: to a networked printer (on our win2k3 server). We'd done that with something like: net use lpt1: \\<server>\<printer> /persistent:yes Our environment is traditional: file/print server, workstations, ADS, most users are restricted, HP printers. Allowing users ...

Port used by another device
When I try to use a Canon 340P scanner on my XP machine it indicates the Port is already in use by another device. Looking at Printers and Faxes shows that an old HP4L, that has been disposed of, is still on the system with a status of deleting. Nothing I can think of to continue the deletion process works. I presume the incomplete deletion is the reason for being unable to use the scanne...
