It's rare enough that I usually forget the "solution" between events. The solution is to unplug USB devices and reboot the system. I can then plug the devices back in and things usually go back to normal for another long period. I have not added or removed any devices in a long time. I then created a shortcut to that drive on my desktop. That drive has since failed and I've taken it out of the pc. It appears that when we start XP from a cold start (i.e. the computer has been off for several hours) it boots in a reasonable amount of time (less than 2 minutes). However if it is restarted or we shut it off and start it a few minutes later it takes between 10 and 30 minutes to boot. Is this issue familiar to anyone?
