Lost Sound following BIOS update
Following a recent update of BIOS from HP version 4.0 to 4.2, all audio was
lost. I have a Conexant HD soundboard in an HP dv8000 laptop. I've checked
BIOS setup; all audio hardware and software checks indicate everything is
working okay (but still no audio). Could it be Norton 360, which may have
been running when new BIOS was installed? Other suggestions?...

CHKDSK restart loop
Wincows MCE 2005 here -- I ran chkdsk from the GUI. I rebooted, ate
dinner while it checked, and then it rebooted by itself, and started
the CHKDSK process over again. I shut it down, and powered up three
different times -- each time it started the CHKDSK over again, even
though I had 7 seconds to press any key to make it stop. I pressed a
key and it stopped. Then it wouldn't go any furth...

wmiprvse process
In my XP Home box, taks manager indicates that wmiprvse.exe is sucking up no
less than 70% of the cpu time. Anyone ever experienced this and found a
solution?
This typically is experienced when the system is booted and continues
thereafter.
Thanks

2 Power management problems
There's something strange with power management on this computer : When
I tell it to go into sleep mode (Start > shut down > hold shift so the
sleep mode button changes, because I want it to write everything to ram
and power down completely), it prepares to do this, and just about when
you're supposed to get the screen where it's writing everything to the
disc the screen refreshes ...

When I try to backup, the process seems successful until about 2/3 through
the process when the utility stops & doesn't give an error message.
I disable my screen saver, disconnect the modem, & close the anti-virus &
firewall before opening Backup. There is more than enough space on the hard
drive to store a backup. I choose to save the backup to the Desktop. How can

Lazy PC!
For some reason without warning my pc has decided to only work with one
program at a time. If i open a program after i have one open previously some
form of conflict occurs. Best described by trying to listen to music while
working. It sounds exactly like in the old days when a record jumped a groove
or got stuck, missing notes and generally annoying. Speed is affected when
running two p...

Help and Support opening v.slowly
For a while, I couldn't get the Help and Support function to open from the
start menu (XP Home). And I'll also admit that I'm an active add/delete
program user -- always looking for good things to try. After researching and
trying repairs, it now works -- but takes 1 min 40 sec to open. I have no
idea what to look at. Or move. Or download. Any suggestions? Thanks!...

I too have lost my DVDrw/player.
There is one big difference between my problem and the ones I read here.
That is my os xpsp2 states that my dvd is healthy and operating. My computer
lists it as dvd ram. It use to work. I've been messing with my hard drives
because I got light on space and needed some. Also, I may be missing upper &
lower filters for the dvd. CD works fine. Separate drives. Anyone got any

Hello everyone,
Any good websites that explain System Monitor and Performance Logs and
Alerts. I would like step by step information and screen shots on how to
use these two tools in WinXP. Some tips would also be helpful. I found the
following article on the subject. It's easy to follow and understand.

Background tasks do not run
How can I get background tasks to run?
If I have a program which is running (perhaps creating an index from a
lot of files or whatever) then it will only do its work if it is in the
*foreground* and in the active window.
As soon as the window goes from the foreground then its activity will
drop to zero. This happens even if there is no foreground activity at
all. For example if I o...

Bakup software recommendations wanted
As the title says, I'd like to get any good recommendations. Is there
any software out there that would back up to a DVD without compressing
the files, and would pack the DVD as tightly as possible? To explain
what I mean, a number of years ago, I remember there being a piece of
software that created a RAMdisk, then wrote an image to it of exactly
one CD which it would burn to an actual CD. T...

"Temporary files" I will gain over 7 GB of space (25% of my hard drive).
Description given:
"Programs sometimes store temporary information in a TEMP folder. Before a
program closes, it usually deletes this information. You can safely d...
