Using Quicktime on a PC is a Bummer for Me
I put this program on to accommodate my camera and decided to view the
National Geographic video clips.
The program performance was the slowest, most unfriendly and buggiest I can
recall since the days of the 386 PC!
Is this because the code is running on a PC? Do I have to burn sheep guts
to make it work decently?
I cannot believe the program runs this badly on Macs or they'd be ...

Slow document opening when LAN enabled
Documents of all types open very slowly ( 5-6 seconds ) when the LAN is
enabled. When disabled they open instantly.
I have tried another LAN card/cable disabling the one on board - no luck.
I have even tried another LAN - have also stopped all services starting up
in msconfig.
AV and firewall have been disabled - still the same.
Nothing appears to be using CPU time and there is plenty of a...

Slow Serial Communication with XP's command prompt
Hi,
I've written many DOS programs using Borland's C compiler and serial port
driver's that I wrote back in the 80s. They have worked on every MS
operating system since DOS 3.11, and continue to work under XP, however, when
transmitting data there are long (just about exactly 100 ms) between groups
of characters being transmitted. How does one remove/reduce these pauses?
Thanks,
S...

Registry Repair, Clean Up and File Fix for Windows
Every Microsoft Windows operating system has a registry. Your system
registry holds a wealth of information about your computer, which is
why we constantly hear from users that after using their PC for a
short length of time, it no longer works the way it used to. This is
due in part to invalid entries that exist in your system registry,
that might exist because of software you are no longer ...

Shut down hangs
Hi,
I know that this is a tricky one, but I'm at a loss!
When I do Start/Turn Off Computer/Turn Off, the following happens:
1. The PC shuts down correctly (v. rarely!)
2. Hangs, at various stages of the shut down sequence (usually either at
Turn Off or saving settings). Also, when I get Task Manager up, I can drag
it around the desktop rendering out the screen as I go!
3. Once i...

Error starting Server service (lanmanserver)
We've lost visibility of a desktop on our home network, although it can see
all the other PCs and everyone can ping everyone else. Think I've tracked
down the problem to the Server service not starting on the desktop concerned.
It is set up to start automatically. However, when I try to start manually
I get "Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified". So which file is

Very slow write disc access with buffering
Hi there,
I experiment VERY slow write disc access.
To narrow down the problem I wrote a small program to write a file by block
of
16MB.
The test program uses the Win32 API CreateFile/WriteFile/CloseHandle.
CreateFile can have a flag buffering/no buffering FILE_FLAG_NO_BUFFERING
(FILE_FLAG_WRITE_THROUGH doesn't change anything to my tests).
When writting :
- with buffering it's ...

networking), but regular mode and safe mode with networking brings up the
activation prompt. Clicking yes blanks the screen momentarily before
