Startup Programs
Sorry this is so long but I have some specific questions I haven't really
found answers for. I have XP but dialup. My startup is so slow. I printed out
the startup programs & it is almost a page long. What do I really need? I
have read artilcles that say you only need your anti virus, but still have
some questions. I don't know where to look up these specific programs to see
exactly what...

Processor speed showing wrong?
With a Compaq computer, it has a AMD Sempron 3200+ and in the setup it shows
that it runs at 1800 MHz. I know that's what it does run at, but the problem
is, in the System Properties it shows:
AMD Sempron(tm) Processor
3200+
984 MHz, 224 Mb of RAM
I know it needs more RAM, but any ideas why the CPU speed is cut in half?...

Random shutdowns and program failer
My computer suddenly started shutdowns at random times. They aren't too often
but very strange. Then on startup we have the computer set to request a
password. when you click on the icon it just flashes the password box instead
of just opening it. I figured out that in order to make it stay up so you
could actually put in the pass word you have to press a key on the key board.
then not too lo...

PerfEnablePackageIdle and battery performance
Regarding http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896256:
My understanding of PerfEnablePackageIdle is that a value of 1
sacrifices battery life for a performance improvement, and a value of
0 improves battery life while sacrificing performance. I created batch
files that change the registry value (so that I can switch it to 0
when running on batteries for any extended amount of time) however I'm

RPC service don't start up: access denied
Hi!
On my XP SP2 I went offline (WLAN) and couldn't reconnect to my
access-point. So I restarted the machine.
But know, the RPC service does not start up, so many other programs or
services won't also startup. If I start it manually I get the message "RPC
service count not be started up on local computer. Error 5: access is denied".
I could NOT open the properties of the service to chan...

Explorer hogging system resources
I have noticed over the past few months that every once in a while, maybe
once every other day, for whatever reason, my computer will experience an
onslaught of poor performance that can only be fixed by manually restarting
the explorer process (with this approach, the problem usually resurfaces
after an hour or two), or, ideally, restarting the computer.
Basically, to briefly describe ...

Defrag doesn't work because chkdsk doesn't work
I can not run disk defragmenter because I get the error "Disk Defragmenter
has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: (C:). Please run
Chkdsk /f." Naturally, running chkdsk /f from the command prompt doesn't
work, same error. Check disk is scheduled to run at start up (and I can't
figure out how to get this to go away either) but it always gets an
"unspecified error". ...

using Word or Excel or any other pc based program. I realize it could be a
hardware issue but don't know where to start and I highly doubt it is a

Disk Defragmenter - wuredir.cab file
my disk defragmenter keeps getting help up by the wuredir.cab file.
Actually, I have 2 of these files in c:windows\softwareDistribution. One was
created today and one October 2006. Should I have these files at all or just
one of them? How do I get the defrag to get past them?
