ntbackup "needs to close" in Windows XP
I tried to run ntbackup.exe on my Win XP SP2 system (Dell GX280). It started in Wizard mode. It ran normally until I got to Choose a place to save your backup. It was defaulted to 3½ Floppy A: so I clicked Browse... First, it wanted me to insert a diskette in drive A: but I simply clicked Cancel and it went to the Browse dialog. I chose a folder on a server to put the backup. After on...

Default power scheme changes
How can I change the power management scheme for the default user in WinXP pro SP2 -- specifically, the scheme that is in effect when the system is turned on before any user logs on. More specifically, with a notebook computer, if I turn the machine on, then don't do anything with it right away, it hibernates rather quickly. I'm using that system as a print server so want it to stay on....

Another Windows running slow - too slow to use anymore
I have seen a lot of posts here about windows running slow, and it has happened to me, too. It is at this point too slow to be useable. This is XP Home/ SP2, with all current updates Takesw about 10 minutes to boot; if I try to open a directory, a window appears, it goes blank, and about 30 seconds later the contents reappear. The hard disk is ticking away most all the time, and the fan...

When not connected remotely, computer searches for remote computer?!?!
I have a client who connects to his work computer from home via VPN and RDP. When he is at work and he tried to right-click any file other than an exe, it takes 1-2 minutes for the pop-up menu to open. I have followed tons of articles and tips and finally sniffed the packets and found that the work computer is actually looking for his home computer?!? I searched through the registry for the...

Perfmon - Scripting its use??
I don't know if this is possible, but what I would like to do is setup perfmon so that I can have a list of counters for local or remote machines in an ini file or batch file or something. Then when I start perfmon it will load the counters I have pre-configured in the ini file. Basically we have quite a few Exchange servers and we get some added and removed all the time. Its becoming a pa...

several standard monitors
I noticed that my hardware manager shows 4 standard monitors and one plug & play device, allthough it is a notebook unit and I never tried to connect any other monitor unit on it. Wd. be grateful if someone could explain, if this is normal behavior in XP SP2 or if it is caused by installations of any programms. If it is a malfunction, how can I deactivate them safely? Can't detect any pr...

Registry entry creates vulnerability
Recovering from Trojan.Wimad/Downloader infection. Man, is there a bunch of goofy stuff in the registry, and I have no way to find out what's right or wrong 'cept to ask for help. Symantec's support pages led me to: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run where I didn't find the entry they said I would. I did, however, find these 2 that seem odd: Name: Service Host Type: R...

Power Surge on USB hub port
I have posted this as general info for those who have found the same problem. This message kept appearing on a client's P.C. The symptoms were that the USB ports would work intermittently. The Secondary IDE channel which the optical drives were connected to was also dead. I traced the fault to be the front panel USB port (on the front of the P.C. case) It was damaged inside. This must ha...

Computer HANGS on Safe Mode
Hello again, I want to boot my Windows MCE 2005/XP Pro system into Safe Mode. It starts loading files, but hangs at MUP.SYS. I have asked for advice here and on a tech forum. I have not received any help. I get the impression that fixing this problem is too difficult or too tedious for many techs. Yes, I tap F8. Yes, I choose "Safe Mode." No, I do not need to wipe the drive an...
