freeze for no apparent reason. The screen will freeze, with no keyboard or
mouse input. ctrl-alt-del will not work. I have to push the reset button on
the computer to get it to reboot. Sometimes there is a click over the
speakers at the time of lockup.

Problems with MPEGs
My Explorer crashes when trying to load MPEG thumbnails, giving me the Data
Execution Prevention popup. This seems to happen with all (or almost all)
MPEG files. The closest I've come to identifying the problem was when I did
something with an effected MPEG, I forget what(I believe I tried to play
one), and got an error report
message that sent me to the microsoft site, though all it sai...

Does encrypting file system work if file was originally encrypted on NTFS and moved to non windows partition?
hello,
I am trying to devise a method of archiving all my old messages in
Outlook 2003 and then storing them in online storage. My service
doesn't support Secure transfers so I need to encrypt the files
instead. The way I understand it, the EFS security works as long as
the file is on an NTFS partition however I am under the impression
that when the actual data gets written to another th...

Low virtual memory
I am running windows xp and keep getting an error message that the system is

On the C disc there are 13.1 used GB and 24 free Gb.
On looking in the advanced systems info the recommended paging file size for
all drives is 381MB and it is currently allocated 489MB.
The actual paging file size i...

Re-formatting & re-loading windows XP
Every 6 months or so, I back-up my necessary files, then re-format 'C' and
re-load my XP OS (OS purchased separately) and my programs to get rid of a
lot of junk that accumulates. I've done this 4 or 5 times in the past. I just
attempted the process again (clean-up the computer), but I'm getting the
message "current system is newer than one attempting to be installed". This

Help-Recovering from Trojan.Wimad/Downloader
Recovering from Trojan.Wimad/Downloader infection. Man, is there a bunch of
goofy stuff in the registry, and I have no way to find out what's right or
wrong 'cept to ask for help.
Symantec's support pages led me to:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run where I didn't find the
entry they said I would. I did, however, find these 2 that seem odd:

WINDOLD FOLDER: UPGRADING MOTHERBOARD
Hi there,
I need expert advice: I was asked by my tech service to reinstall XPpro
after of a motherboard upgrade. They performed a full reinstallation of XP on
a new 'windows' folder (instead of reformatting the hard drive) and renamed
the old windows folder to 'windold'.
My question is, it's safe to delete this 'windold' folder? I assume it's not
needed by the system anymore... not su...

Windows is running slow
I'm assuming that my registry has a lot of dead entries, since my system is
running for about 3 years straight w/o a reinstallation os the OS. Windows
over time lost some performance. I did already the regular TS steps, like
defrag, uninstalling old S/W and tweaked the performance wherever possible
but Windows w/o startup items and non-MS services enabled still needs about 3
min to boot ...
