I have two file types which I treat the same because I accept both in an
applicaiton I built. So the file association settings are exactly the same
for both extensions and are actually set at install time by
InstallShieldExpress. When I double click on a file of type1, the file is

Are these files necessary?
WindowsXP Pro SP2
In Documents and Settings ....jpi_cache\file\1.0 ... there is a list of
1,362 items. The earliest one is dated May 2003 and the latest is dated Aug
2006. There are none dated 2007.
They are mostly 1K. Are these listings necessary or can they be removed
safely?

black screen after users list
When I start up XP, everything appears to be moving along smoothly. But
within a few seconds of opening the screen with the list of users, the screen

logging onto windows XP
Had a problem with a slow computer so erased the drive installed new ram and
reinstalled windows xp. have had it running now for about 2 months. Shut it
down about 2 days ago and when I tried to turn it back on I am getting a
small window with a big RED X and two buttons one yes and one no and no
matter which I click it logs me off the computer.

Keyboard won't work
I run windows xp media
i have a microsoft multimedia keyboard
the keyborad has stopped working
i tried troubleshoot advice to no avail...uninstalled and tried to reinstall
device and driver in device manager. message code 39 drivers corrupt or no
good.
tried, windows updates, unplug replug, restart, update drivers and
reinstall..same message
i am out of ideas.
any advice?

Saving files
I have access to a webpage that shows a list of links. Each link leads to a
file that I want to save on my machine. The problem is that when I right
click on the link and select "save target as", XP adds an extension to the
filename when it saves it. For example one of the files is a script named

Once its been setup and used, how can I remove a wireless network that
appears in wireless network list?
I see no way to delete a no longer wanted wireless network from the

Reloading XP with e-machine oem disks
I am trying to reload with the e-machine oem disk.
I get to the point where the computer names is entered. I have tried both
options of leaving the name and changing the name.
The computer hangs up at that point.

Windows XP Fail to Load 'Occasionally'
Hi,
I have a new PC which is only a couple of months old with the
following spec:
CPU: Intel Core Duo 2.13 Ghz
RAM: 2Gb

Firewire no longer recognized - tried to repair, but tells me no TCP/IP installed
On my laptop, using XP prof., my firewire is no longer recognized. So
I go into the connection for the 1394, under support and hit REPAIR.
It then gives me this error :

language bar keyboard combinations
Hi.
When using the language bar, I can create special characters, like
when I press the " ' " key and subsequently the " e " key, I get " é
".
Now I've installed various European languages on my pc, like French,
German and Spanish and I'm wondering where I can find a list of what
key combinations will create what special characters.
Does anyone know how to figure that out?

How do u get Autocomplete in IE 7 to work
Hi all, since there's no IE 7 NG, I'll post here.
As above, how do you get Autocomplete to work!
All the options are ticked under Autocomplete option, but the stupid thing
doesnt ask if I want to save any passwords. It never has.
I've checked Google/Yahoo, but I cant see anything on how to fix it for IE

can't change desktoptheme in desktopmanager
After uninstalling a desktop thema I can't change the picture on my desktop.
The choosebotton stays grey and I can't select another picture or theme.
I work with OS XP Home SP2

Double click on a folder opens Search window in Windows Explorer instead of Open
Double click on a folder opens Search window in Windows Explorer
Double click on a folder in Windows Explorer always opened the folder. Now
this opens Search window. And in accordance the Search position is in bold
in the file menu instead of Open. But click on Open works properly. (I have
WinXP+SP2.)
How can I restore this setting?

Hard drive cleaning
The box is REALLY starting to crawl. The kids have left, and I'd like
to format and start fresh.
Debating between an external hard drive to copy everything to, format
the installed drive, adding desired programs and data back; OR just
buying another hard drive removing current one, install XP on it, then

Using dual display

TASKMGR options (tabs) missing
TASKMGR just came up showing only the "CPU Usage" and "CPU Usange History"
windows and nothing else. No tabs or list menu. Only way to shut it down =
[alt]f4.
How can I restore it to its original state?

I wrote a .bat script SayHello.bat amd got (essentially): "C:
\SayHello.bat is not a valid Win32 application."
The two line script was simply:

To my surprise, "Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder options | File
