xp home upgrade 2nd license
I want to upgrade a second computer to xp home. I have the upgrade disk and
the Product Key.
The first computer (already upgraded) is at my second home in another state,
so I don't have access to the Product ID off that first computer (didn't
realize it existed, let alone that I would need it).
Tried to purchase additional license on Microsoft website, but it asks for
the Product ID,...

Gah! Weird profiles after reducing account priviliges
Hi - After dropping any account from admin level to "user", I've
noticed the following:
1 - The wallpaper's gone.
2 - I can't create or delete files in the Windows folder. (I get an
access denied message.)
3 - When I right click on the desktop, I get the context menu. Under
New> , I only get Shortcut and Folder, I don't have Notepad, Word doc,
Image etc.

USB thumbdrives want to load a driver now...
Strange problem started...whenever I want to use a USB thumbdrive or
my USB external harddrive, Windows says found new hardware then the
Found New Hardware Wizard appears. I have tried letting it search for
the driver and also tried picking some from \system32\drivers as well
as the i386 directory. I reloaded my updated for SP2 as well the

Error on \Device\CdRom0 during paging operation ???
Hi,
I have seen these issues also with WinXP, so maybe someone
has a clue...
A customer's Server SBS 2003 has these problems (increasing)
- CDrom has a bad block (ranging from none to 50+ times).
- Error on CDrom during paging operation (about 20 times).
(all per CD read attempt).
I replaced the NEC DVD+/-RW by a NEW Pioneer DVD+/-RW.

new ram installed
I have an E-machines computer with a 2.70 ghz mother board and a 40 GB Hard
Drive it came with 256mb of Ram . A questionable repair man added 512 mb of
Generic Ram and the computer kept rebooting, so he replaced it with 512 mb of
high performance Ram , will this high performance ram hurt my computer
I now have 760 mb of Ram total in my computer.

Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file
WinXP SP2. Running fine one moment, then started receiving the above error
when trying to run programs.
Rebooted, and seemed OK up to the user icon screen. Select a user and

Add Network Drive in a Workgroup
Hi. My Windows XP Professional SP2 has been removed from a domain. I
have set it to be a member of a Workgroup called just that. The other
systems in this Workgroup are Windows 2000 Professional SP4. On the Windows
XP machine I can easily make a Network drive to a drive on the W2K maching
through the Add a Network Drive Wizard say for the root //MYMACHINE/c$. But

annoying status messages
Is there any way to turn off the status messages that flash in the lower
right corner of the screen? (e.g., network cable unplugged, unused desktop
icons, new hardware installed, etc.?)

IPSec Components locked in XP Home Edition?
Hi all,
I'm having problems connecting to Sonicwall VPNs using Sonicwall's VPN
Client from a XP HOME ED PC. Btw, I have NO problems from my XP Pro PC.
I have the latest VPN client software (ver 3.1.556 and even tried the beta 4
which I rolled back from) so that is not the issue. Both PCs are at the

My Recent Documents
Hi folks,
Each week I empty the list of My Recent Documents (just to keep things clear
and organised) but then I find that thereafter whenever I open a document
(such as a Word document, image file etc.) it doesn't appear on the My
Recent Documents list - as if I didn't even open it - it just says it's
empty.

Cannot back up
I too am getting the error message "The backup file name could not be used.
Please insure it is a valid path and that you have permission to access"

skipping double letters
I'm using XP MCE on a Toshiba notebook PC.
I keep having a trouble of letters being skipped when I type rapidly.

Can't find digital camera wizard or install camera
I have recently installed XP on a new PC. I've installed my Canon Powershot

RunDLL error, report to Microsoft

Lost access to a 180GB hard drive
I am running xp with sp2. hard drive shows up in disk manager as
health/active online, but does not have a drive letter assigned to it. Right
click does not give me the option to asign a drive letter. This hard drive
was working fine yesterday with about 85GB of files stored on it. CPU 2.4GHz.
Hard drives does not show up in window explorer. What is up with this?

Windows Desktop Search not finding Outlook Messages
"I have Windows XP SP2 and Outlook 2007 with Exchange Server 2003
I downloaded and installed Windows Desktop Search 3.01.
When I search for a message in Outlook, I only get "No Matches Found

Windows XP and IIS
Hi
I have IIS setup on my Windows XP (SP2) machine. I am running SQL Server
2000 MSDE. I have, as far as i am aware, my computer setup with the date
system for the UK. If i browse the data in the SQL database then it appears

HTTP 500 Error Message
I am using Windows XP 2004 Media O/S and Internet Explorer 7
Each time I attempted to verify http://localhost, I get the following error

Confused by WinXP Event Viewer Device Names
I have 2 hard drives: my boot drive [80 GB] has 2 partitions labeled "C" and
"G"; my back up drive [120 GB] has 4 partitions labeled "D", "I" , "H" and
"W"
WinXP Event Viewer shows a bad block on "Device\Hardisk0\D"
But WinXP Disk Management shows "Disk 0" as the HD with partitions labled

.REG files have to be in Unicode?
I noticed that if I export a registry key to a .REG file, it is in

Desktop Icons Bootup Problem
Some months ago I presented this problem but it was never resolved. When I

Tooltips behind toolbar
XP Pro, fully up to date with patches
When you place the cursor over a quick launch or toolbar icon you get a
descriptive tooltip window.
After a couple of days these tooltips appear behind the toolbar. You can
see the top of them but the message is hidden.
How do I get the proper behavior back without rebooting?
