Network Adaptor failure
My OS is Windows XP service pack 2. The computer is Dell 4700c.
I had been having a problem connecting to the net. I contacted my isp who
directed me to Dell who sent me back to the isp. Apparently the IP address
was the culprit.
The isp sent some kind of signal to the modem and a new IP address appeared
and the net again was accessible. I just did a scan using the Network

computer getting really slow
My first post to this group, hope I'm in the right place and if not
please direct me to the appropriate newsgroup.
I've had this Toshiba Satellite A15S129 laptop for a few years now.
It runs on WinXP. I use it at wifi spots around town, cafes and
libraries and the like. It has antivirus and anti-spyware programs,
up to date.
Lately this laptop runs very slow. I really notice it in the Net...

xp sp2 give back hard drive space after...
Does xp sp2 give back hard drive space after files are deleted & recycle bin
emptied? If not, how can I get that space back? I've deleted many files,
and it doesn't appear to be giving back the space.

DELL XP?
Is there a special version of XP for DELL? I have a friend who is
trying a standard XP HOME on a machine he built with a DELL
motherboard - it won't boot past the WINDOWS logo. I'm thinking he
needs the DELL version of XP, if it indeed exists.
If it does, can someone post?

svchost.exe-Application Error
When Windows booting, I get "svchost.exe-Application Error", and it state
"The instruction at "0x021cafe2" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The

Logging off problems
hey all. I am having trouble with logging off the user names on my desktop.
This all started last week when I upgraded to Internet Explorer 7. What
happens is that I go to Start, Log Off, and then hit Log off. But the
computer doesn't do anything. I took it to my local computer repair shop and
they told me it was fixed. When it came back tonight, I was able to log off

Prevent XP Professional from locking laptop every 15 minutes
Hi,
I have a work-provided laptop that has been setup by our IT department.
I have admin privileges so can edit the registry, install programs etc.
One thing that drives me nuts with their install is that they have set up
the laptop to automatically lock after 15 minutes of no input. While this is

uninstalling windows programs
i would like to uninstall the microsoft programs
i do not use. i have a very small hard disk & there
is a lot of unnecessary software loaded on it
that i have no use for.
i'd like to remove:
msn explorer
windows messenger
internet explorer
games
& other things, but these are the main things.
i have other software i like much better than these

"Welcome" Screen at Startup
I have just re-installed XP including SP2 and IE 7.
When I start the PC it goes through the Windows XP screen and then the blue
"Welcome" screen comes up. There is nothing else on it - no name or icon -
just the single word "Welcome". After about 5 seconds it clears
automatically ( no click required) and I am taken to Desktop.

My Documents folder disapears when not an Administrator....
Found a new twist on the missing My Documents in the My Computer folder...
If the user is anything but an Administrator, they loose their My Documents
folder. It looks like it is lost only for any number of users greater than 3
(not including the Guest / Administrator accounts). My 3rd 4th and 5th

My Recent Docs issue
Hi folks,
Each week I empty the list of My Recent Documents (just to keep things clear
and organised) but then I find that thereafter whenever I open a document
(such as a Word document, image file etc.) it doesn't appear on the My
Recent Documents list - as if I didn't even open it - it just says it's
empty.

Cannot Load Multiple CDs
Hello I have a problem that I cannot figure out. The problem comes up when I
try to load a game that has multiple CDs. I am fine when there is only one
CD or one DVD. I am using XP and normal DVD/CD roms. I have two and the

XP is asking for programs when clicking multimedia files
Even if the file-type setup is set right (as always) XP is asking what
program I like to open the files in (on WAV, MP3, WMV etc). Some other
types always open in "sound recorder" (the old one) even when the
file-type is set to Media Player. Why is XP not using my settings?

Changing " always use this program settings"
When I put a cd into my DVD/CD drive a screen used to come up saying what do
you want to do with this disk. I always cancelled the screen. Now someone
seems to have clicked always open with Windows Media Player. This is driving
me nuts, if i put a backup disk, a blank disk anything in its starts media
player. How can I stop this. Thanks in advance.

XP File Sharing Question, Local Computer Users Only
I am setting up our PC in my small business.
One Administrator account and several Limited User accounts planned.
I do not want Limited User accounts to access the any hard drive files accept

One minute delay after unlocking Windows XP
I normally lock my PC when I will be away for a while by control-alt-delete
and "lock computer", which has worked well until recently. Now, there is
exactly a 60 second delay after I type my password to unlock the PC. It is
exactly 60 sec every time, and I have tried it with antivirus, firewalls, etc

Green Bar
I don't know what the green bar at the bottom of the screen that shows your
progress is called. My problem is that all of a sudden yesterday, it
disappeared. I haven't changed anything & it worked all these years. I can't

Both CD
I tried to update the drivers for my CD players (one a burner). When I
tried to install the new HP driver for the first one, it deleted both
drives! I came here and found a download called CDgone, but it didn't
help. Any ideas on how to get my CD drives back? The Device Manager
doesn't show them either, but shows no problems with the controllers.
I haven't a clue!
