dirty bit
Have usb drive that has succumbed to the dirty bit horror. i can't
defragment it because it is supposed to be chkdsk'ed. I use chkntfs /x
k: and it no longer tried to chkdsk it at boot time but, apparently, the
bit is still set so I can't defrag it.
Is there some way to actualy reset the bit rather than just ignore it at
boot time? (Other than run the chkdsk... it's a 300 drive and woul...

What is the Blue pop up at lower right of screen
Every so often I see a small blue rectangular window, sort of ghostly, at the
lower right hand side of my screen. I did have Windows Messanger installed
for a while, but removed it last week. The blue screen is still showing
every so often. Today it displayed message that normally comes in my email.
Once last week it gave me a message that was rather lewd.
Is this spy/ad ware or som...

Windows XP - Copying folder permissions
I have set up a directory structure for a project and set varying permissions
for different subfolders. I would like to copy this directory structure for
each new project I set up, and to have the permissions remain with the new
copy. Simply "dragging and dropping" the directory structure doesn't copy
the permissions. Is there a way to easily copy these permissions?...

Scheduled Task fails when not logged in.
I have a scheduled task that runs a batch file to copy a single file from one
location on the local C drive to another location on the same C drive. The
job runs fine when I am logged in. When I am not, it appears that the task
is running but the file copy fails. I think the task is running because,
when I do log in, the last run time reflects a time when no one was logged
in. I've t...

wmi to set FTP permissions
Hello.
we have a large number of servers (over 700) that need to have FTP
installed/activated. I have used WMI in some management tasks and from what
I have read, you can use it to set permissions. We are not running AD and
the servers are not in a domain.
I can't seem to find much information on this.
Does anyone know:
1) can this be done with WMI or do I need another method?

Compact command yields zero files
At the command prompt, I tried to use the compact/c command (followed by the

0 total bytes of data are stored in 0 bytes.
The compression ratio is 1.0 to 1.
The file was not already compressed.
Why didn't it work, and how do I get i...

wanted to do a PC restore. Unfortunatley I hit "yes" now all my infromation
under my profile only is gone... If I try to do a system restore the points
are gone. Is there any thing I can do to revert back to the way my PC was a

I have found what I consider to be a bug in Windows XP. It would affect

installs the Microsoft Word Viewer also.

Why does my mouse change to a "pointer" and a cd image?
My mouse keeps blinking from a regular pointer to a pointer with a CD image
to the top right and then back to a regular pointer.
My guess it's telling me to insert a CD, but I have no idea why it would
want a CD inserted.
Anyone know how to turn it off????
Thanks in advance.
