Windows Vista Home Premium
Hi, Where can I post a question regarding Windows Vista Home Premium? I believe that my question is simple . . . Does Windows Vista Home Premium software have a partitioning utility? I wish to partition a 320GB drive and Norton PartitionMagic is not compatible (according to Prashanta.Kumar of their tech support department in some other country). Thanks, Grant ...

??? Cannot Compress Volume ???
Hi everyone, I'm an administrator on my XP Pro SP2 machine. I have a hard drive attached to my machine via a USB 2.0 drive enclosure (I'm not sure if this fact is even relevant). I can use the drive with no problems. When I right click the drive letter in Explorer and view "Properties | General", I see I do *not* have the option of compressing this drive for some reason. I've attached ...

File sharing blocked
I cannot enable file sharing. I get the error message:- An error occured when trying to share (folder name). The data is invalid. The shared resource was not created at this time. In the firewall settings, file sharing is ticked but greyed out. The problem started after I had to reinstall Windows XP (Don't ask!). Until then I was sharing things without problems. If I setup user accounts with day/time restrictions using "net user <account> /time:...", will the user be logged out when the time period expires while the user is logged in, or does it just prevent the user from logging in outside of the designated times? This is just Windows XP Home edition, version 2002, Service Pack 2. Thanks. M...

Win XP always displays wrong date on boot-up
What happens is after I log into Windows XP Media Ed., the time and date ALWAYS goes back to last synch. I think there is a problem with the registry as Date/Time also ALWAYS gives an error when trying to do a synch. (Of course, other programs, such as antivirus, etc. also gives errors on boot-up because of this problem.) Help! Thanks. Please note: I am an end user and not a prog...

XP installation problem
Hi, I have a bit of a complicated problem that I hope has a simple answer. I have a laptop that required a system repair. However, the original XP disk is pre-SP2. I made an XP+SP2 disk from that copy, but it is not bootable. I tried to boot with the original XP disk and swap in the XP+SP2 disk when it came to the user agreement, but that hung during load up after switching the disks...

Network change server from ME to XP Home
We had a working network with a Windows ME machine as the server and 2 workstations running Windows 98. We replaced the Windows ME machine with a newer machine running Windows XP Home and now one of the workstations will not connect to the network while the other one will although the mapping (needed by one of the progams) takes a bit longer to make the connection - it says it is not con...

XP Go Slow
I have recently upgraded my microsoft Office from 2003 to 2007 and since then my Windows XP has been on a go slow. This is particularly apparent in Outlook. I decided that the answer may well be to F Disk and reload everything from the beginning but when I read some articles on the internet they seemed to suggest that you do not do an F Disk with Windows XP but rather do a repair. I look...

Save or Open dialog option doesn't present itself
In using one of our mission critical applications, there is a point where you select a "Submit" button. Now, for other PC's, a dialog box comes up that gives the open to Save (you can navigate to the place you want it to be saved to, etc.). However, when one of my people selects "Submit" it simply opens the file in Notepad. I realize he is being a little fussy (all he has to do at tha...

XP rearranges desktop icons when switching users, why?
For my XP home edition (the french edition familial to be precise) the screen is set to 1224x768. However, if you place an icon at the bottom right hand corner of the screen and then change user (without logging the session out), when you come back to your session later the icon has been moved. If you have lots of icons then you get them nicely scrambled for you. It's as if during the u...

Dual Boot - - XP with 98SE, or Vista with 98SE
Hi, I am planning to buy a new PC with Windows XP, Home or PRO, or Vista Home Premium installed and I would like to install my existing copy of Windows 98SE on it with a Dual Boot option at startup. I need 98SE's option to run a few DOS-based programs like AutoCAD v11 which cost me $2500 back in 1993 and still works perfectly. Instead of running DOS window from 98SE, when I boot or reb...

Change/Remove missing in ARP console
I noticed all the Change/Remove buttons disappeared after I installed Framework 1.1 w/ Service Pack 1. Only those installed afterwards have buttons. I tried all the things i found from google , from running sfc /scannow, changing "NoRemove" entries in the registry, looking at group policies up to utilities on Kelly's Korner but nothing worked. One thing I noticed is when you looked at ...

Start yp and bootable CD for Win-XP-Pro, similar to startup-floppy for Win-98-SE
Earlier, in order to format and partition my HDD, I had been using the Startup-floppy of Win-98-SE . CD is always better than the horribly unreliable floppy. When I attempted to copy the contents of the Win-98-SE-startup-floppy onto a CD (by burning the CD), 3 files (namely, command.com , config.sys and autoexec.bat) weren't copied onto the CD, even though all the other files and folders...

Very slow File Open/Save Dialog
I experience a very slow File Dialog mainly within Microsoft Applications. If I want to open or save a file in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint in a different directory than the current one it takes up to 1 minute to switch directories. (Same if I try to save attachments out of Outlook) This happens with both, local drives as well as network drives. I experience this on my two XP SP2 machines,...

MS recorder time limitation
Hi, I am looking to remove the time limitation (of 60 secs) on the MS recorder. (start-programs-accessories-entertainment-recorder) Please can anyone advise me on how to remove it please? That is, I'm not looking for a 1 minute work-around - rather a genuine fix. (removal of the time limit) I contacted MS - who politely told me to clear off - as all my genuinely purchased software, 98, X...
