Lost files
XP Pro - 2
Whatever holds the data for the Start -> Run picklist as well as several
other files keep disappearing. The disappearance of the pick list is NOT
from running from running Disk Cleanup, Defragging or any other
housekeeping processes, because they disappear with no such processes
having been done.
If there isn't a way to prevent the Start->Run picklist from being deleted...

No valid Restore Points.
I have had trouble with System Restore failing to restore a month ago. My PC
runs OK currently. I am about to install a digital camera and to create
Restore Point just prior to that installation. Is it advisable to turn off
Sysrem Restore and back on, before creating the new Restore Point.

Big deficiency in MS Explorer Search?
Search will find user-defined file types under 'all files or folders', but
even when they are written with Notepad will not find 'word or phrase in
file'.
Is there a way to make it do this?

Why is DOS so slow in Windows XP?
Is it because DOS is emulated in XP, where in Windows 3.11 or prior its
NATIVE. Even in Windows 98 DOS is native.
Technically Xp may not be using DOS, but its using a command line that
can run some old DOS apps, but not many.
Can anyone tell me why is it so slow?
In Mac OSX Tiger (just an example) I have something called Classic,
which in a way emulates, or more technically thread...

XP Update and starting Excel
Since accepting recent XP Professional updates, my Microsoft Office EXCEL
will not start. I get an error window stating that Windows XP is trying to
find Front Page.
Trying to update again, Service Pack 3 won't install - and the same error
message appears.
Has anyone else experienced this - and what is the solution please?

Install software
Could you tell me how a software (any software) is installed on XP ?
I would like to learn how but no material available.
I know of the install wizard that will show itself when I click the package,
but for example, how opera.exe is installed on Xp is just so beyond my
knowledge.

administrative rights
My neighbor rebooted our computer after it crashed and we got it gixed. he
set up two users and only one has administrative rights and he also set up a
password that none of us can remember. Is there a was to retrieve it? We can
get on the web and things but we can't install anything like the program for

Folder Views
Isn't there SOME way to permanently get rid of these folder icons that
Windows uses to preceed a folder name in Explore or whenever I move through
the hyerarchy of folders? I know about using File|View|Details but that
lasts only for the session. Next time I search through a list of folders...
I'm back to square one. Isn't there a way to present a simple list of

How to restore valuable Hard Drive Space
Our computer is from late 1994 so its only got a dinky 80GB Hard Drive in
it. My brother recently bought himself one of those video iPods and has been
getting carried away at Downloading movies. He has brought the remaining
Hard Drive space down to 14.6GB's. I told him that he need to either buy
himself an external hard drive and use that for his iPod, or he needs to pay

Update 11 SDK
I have an update that keeps showing up. It has been updated (probably 50
times) but everytime
I come back to the PC it says I have updates to install. I install it and it
says successful, but a few min. later

Zipping files in Windows XP
Does one need any third party software or is this support built into the
OS?
Can you just zip any file in Explorer from within the OS without
launching any third party shareware?

Forwarding email
Is it possible to forward emails if you have closed the account? I have two
isp's and I want to close one of them (to save the money) and I was
wondering if there was anything I could do besides notifiying everybody who

Can't run SFC?
XP Pro/SP2 and slipstreamed XP/SP2 CD.
Trying to run "sfc /scannow" get the message that it's the wrong disc for
the XP version installed or that the disc may be damaged.
Can't get out of this Retry/Information/Cancel unless I restart PC, even
Ctrl+Alt+Delete and trying to close from Task Manager doesn't let me
This is the disc used to install XP. No obvious marks on it but have

c:windows\system32\cmd.exe is in use and intall cannot proceed. I cannot get

unable to set "show hidden files and folders"
I am unable to set "show hidden files and folders".
I am running XP Professional SP 2. Dell 1GHz Pentium system.
When I go to file option, click view, then click the button:
[x] show hidden files and folders, click apply, click OK.
Than, when I click file option, view, again,
the same button has been remove and enable the button - "Do not show hidden
files and options".
What did I do ...

Show Desktop Icon stopped working
My Show Desktop icon on the Quick Launch bar is no longer working.
I've deleted it and recreated it (using a couple of different
methods).
No matter how I recreate it, when I press it nothing happens.
This is really bugging me and could really appreciate someone's help
to solve this!

Install ended prematurely because of an error
We downloaded a program because we were having this problem during
install/uninstall. The program was MSICUU2.exe. We couldnt even get this
program to install! This is getting real frickin old. Cannot install anything
or uninstall anything, whether microsoft product or not.
This is what has been done so far: Updates, scandisk, defrag, clean boots,
all microsoft troubleshooting software...

Desktop Short Cut Icons not Opening full window size

"the network path was not found"
One of my Win XP Pro workstations is having trouble talking to our SBS 2003
server.
We have 4 other Workstations that are fine.
I can ping the server. the Hostname resolves. if I connect to \\server\ it
fails w/ error "the network path was not found". if i connect to a share
\\server\share\ it connects and shows the files. if i try to launch an
installer from the share it fails as...
