I am attempting a re-install of XP on a Dell desktop. I am attempting to
downlaod SP2 from the Microsoft update site, however, the system hangs. This
appears to be duye to svchost.exe hogging system resources.
On exploring the KB I have discovered that Hotfix 927891 should solve my
problem - however, it requires that SP2 is installed. The previous version

Lost Desktop Icons When Created New User
I just discovered my 13 year old has visited less-than savory websites
recently. My bad. So much for trust. Anyhow, I immediately bought and
downloaded Netnanny. So that MY account can do whatever it wants and he is

Hi,
I have a problem with one of our computer on the network running
Windows XP. The problem starts after I log in to the machine. Let’s
say
Five to six minutes after login in the computer restarts and gives me

hello,
i appreciate any help anyone can give me - my computer lost power when i was

Adobe Acrobat Reader in my PC ,activate it and download its new
version 7.0.1 . Then I was finally able to open 3 e-mail containing

administartor rights
Although I am on a standalone computer with administrative right there
seems to be certain (obsolete) registry strings that I cannot
modify/delete. Why is this happening? Is there some user with a greater
degree of freedom than that of the administrator? What do I need to do to
delete the obsolete registry strings?

How to copy & preserve timestamp?
I am migrating from a Win2K machine to a new WinXP machine. Both are
attached to a network. I need to copy a number of folders over intact
and I would like to preserve the time stamps. For some reason, the
timestamps are preserved on the files, but not on the folders.
How can I copy the files and folders with the old timestamps?

Start Up Options
I have had to fix some problems recently, but having suceeded, I now find
that when I start the PC, I am sent to a B&W screen which asks me which OS I
want to use. This does take me to the Colour Log On screen, ....
But How do I go back to the good old days..when Start Up takes me straight
to User Log In?...

Hi,
Reinstalled ms xp pro sp2 on new hd and after ms updates & apps install,
a separate window opens up show c:\windows\system32 at start up. any
ideas how to stop the window from opening up?

Date and Time Properties

When I touch the time with my cursor (on the right side of my toolbar) it
doesn't show the date. I can double click it and it will still bring the
date and time properties up. Is there a way to set it up so it will show

Screen Malfunction
I have had to reload windows. In doing so I reset my screen resolution.
Now, when the computer boots up I do not have anything but a black screen.
The computer is on and running, but I can' get anything to show up. My
computer is an inspiron 1150 laptop. It there anyway to reset this? I can
see the bios functions but that is it.

Time is not correct
I have to update my time on Windows every few days!!!

Time server error - Firewalled
I am looking for a method to supply a password to a proxy server when using
the internet time service. I am not logged into my client's network, but I
am connect to their LAN and behind their firewall. I can reach the interenet
using a password protected proxy server. The time service works well when
not behind client firewall, but I spend more time behind the firewall than

Startup Installation
Please help, I have recently re-installed Spyware Doctor because of
performance problems but when I restart my system the Windows Installer
wizard tries to install something, it doesn't tell me what, then a Norton
Anti Virus message stops it saying "Norton Anti Virus doesn't support the
repair"? huh?
Can anyone tell me how I can see what it's trying to install, so I can
disable/fix it...

Latest page doesn't download automatically
Hi, I always have to use the Ctrl button and refresh to get the latest
weather radar picture, earthquake info, etc. These are all set as favorites
and shortcuts. Can you tell me how to tweek the settings to get IE6, SP2 to
