Opening files always goes to search
Somebody please tell me how to fix this. In order to open files or folders, I
have to right click then choose open or explore....

Clean XP Home install problems
The hard drive on my Dell Dimensions 8300 died so I am trying to do a clean
install of XP Home using the Dell supplied re-installation disc. I replaced
the bad drive with a Seagate 160 G. I ran the installation disc for the new
drive without any problem. I start to boot the computer using the OEM disc
and the select drive and formatting goes smoothly. As the system is copying

User account locking every day
I have a user who is currently in another country. She is locked out of the
network
system and she cannot gain access to system unless the password is reset.
I have reset her XP password but, the problem still exist with the continuous
lock outs every morning. She has tried logging out at night but the password
still requires reset in the monring. Any ideas would be brilliant.

Keyboard won't respond on CD or floppy bootup
Running XP SP2. I'm trying to boot my pc from a floppy or Vista Home Premium
Upgrade DVD. I normally use a wireless keyboard but have plugged in a USB
keyboard. I'm able to get to my BIOS fine, but when I'm presented with "Hit
any key to boot from CD or DVD" or when I get the A: prompt from the floppy,
I'm getting no response from hitting any key on my keyboard.

Using both dialup and satellite connections
I live in a rural area and my only options for Internet are dialup and
satellite. After 8 years I am finally making the move to the satellite, and
want to also keep my dialup ISP as a backup. I'm not sure if this is the

2nd hard drive running while disabled?
I installed a new hard drive, thought the old one was dying. Turns out
it was something else. I've left the new drive in place but disabled it.
Does it still run every time the pc is started? Should I disconnect the
power wire to it? Or just go ahead and take it out?...

cursor over subject
when I put my mouse cursor on a subject that has a long line in these
newsgroups, nothing happens. Used to be it would read the whole line
including whatever there was after the dots, but not any more. How do I

instead of getting @ when i press shift+' i get ". its vice versa when i
press shift+2 i get @ instead of ".

stack overflow
I have no idea whether my problem is XP related, browser related, or
ornery computer related. Whenever I go to the New Yorker cartoon caption
site a box appears indicating that there is a "stack overflow at line: 0."
I click ok and then my browser closes. I never get that message any other
time. I have no idea what it means.

Desktop icons are frozen as IE icon
I am using Windows XP and IE 7. I have installed several programs on a new
computer. Each application shortcut appears with the IE icon. How can I
get the icons to change to their normal icon? I have done the right click,
Properties, Change icon, selected any available icon, and clicked apply. I

IE crashes when viewing maps on Mapquest
Hello,
Have windows XP - home, and everytime I try to view a map on mapquest, the
internet explorer crashes. Error signature states:

Windows Explorer will not write to DVD
When I insert a blank DVD into my Rw-DVD writer, windows explorer opens to
create a temporary location for files to be located. However, the option to
"Write files to CD" does not appear and when I try to drag a file into the

Swapping XP licences between 2 PCs

Installation problems
I recently upgraded to Windows XP on my computer. I can not transfer my

Repeating Security Update - Again!
I have a repeating security update (KB923723).
I tried the solution suggested in a previous post, namely deleting the
registry entries and reinstalling, but to no avail. The update pops up a few
seconds after each install.

Anyone any ideas why I cannot use system restore on my machine. It is

System/file back up
All I have is a CD drive and I see from previous posts XP doesn't provide a
straightforward method of backing up to CD's. So what do most people do, get
an external drive? Are they expensive? Easy to install?
