VirtualStore and application upgrades?
Hi! I have a question on this: A program not intended for Vista get installed with elevated privs. as it should in the Program Files folder. A user later makes changes to, say, an INI file by using the applications GUI to make a preference change. The INI file then get virtualized since the user doesn't have write access to PF. So far so good. Later on an administrator updates the...

Getting "website wants to open web content" when printing with IE7
Whenever I try to print using IE7 under Vista, I get a popup saying "A website wants to open web content using this program on your computer." I have to click "allow". Every time. It's getting really annoying. Doesn't look like there's any way to turn that off specifically for printing, without reducing overall security. SURELY there's a way to allow pre-approved print without turnin...

How good is Vista about automatically running installers as administrator?
I've read that there's "heuristic detection" code in Vista's UAC to automagically sense installers (by more than just file name) and issue a "Run as administrator" behind the scenes so that you don't have to do it yourself -- but how good is it? What I'm hoping to avoid are the cases where that doesn't happen and the install bombs halfway through because of a rights issue, or worse, the...

Vista has taken the FUN out of computing.
I have been using computers ever since they came out (It was my job). I have built, repaired, and modified computers. I can program in several languages. And my wife has a new HP with Vista. After reading the messages and pleas for help in this newsgroup and others, if anyone will be honest enough, they will agree that Vista has gone overboard with security. Vista has sucked ALL the FUN out ...

how to allow ping with firewall on
Hi, I am trying to figure out how to allow ping for a Vista Business machine. Some people mentioned to enable ICMP echo request in the core networking rule, however I found that the option is unavailable (this is a standalone machine and the option is gray out). The only way I can do that is to create a custom rule to allow all ICMP traffic. Is it there should be a easier way to do ...

Bitlocker & chkdsk & offline defrag apps
I've learned that offline defrag apps like perfectdisk cannot perform an offline defrag of a disk encrypted with bitlocker. What does everyone else use to defrag offline files on a system encrypted with bitlocker? Or don't you bother? I've also been told that bitlocker can also prevent chkdsk from repairing a drive, has anyone experienced this? I'm fairly experienced with full disk e...
