unhandled IOException
Hi, I have a small test appllication that connects to network share and get the file and folders and display it in a treeview. This application works fine on Windows XP, when I run it on Vista I get the error This application has stopped working. If run from VS2005 in debug mode it would give "IOException was unhandled" "An Unexpected Network error occured" which I am not able to figur...

Windows Firewall Confusing
I had a brief look at Windows Firewall in Vista Ultimate, and I find it exposes far too low a level of detail in the ruleset, and there are so many default rules it is almost incomprehensible without careful study. I administer ISA 2006 and Firewall-1 boxes with hundreds of rules in the ruleset, so none of the concepts are foreign to me, but the UI in Vista Firewall just doesn't organ...

Task manager violates security how many ways?
In a Vista Ultimate installation, there are several administrative users and several standard users. A standard user can press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to invoke the Task Manager. A standard user can click the Processes tab. So far, so good. At the bottom of the Task Manager screen is a button saying "Show processes from all users". I HAVE NOT CLICKED THIS BUTTON. Intuitively I think that ...

UAC locks some administrators
When booting Vista, one admin can log on whereas another cannot. Limited users can not log in at all. When one cannot log in, the screen goes black although ctrl+alt+del combination still functions to start task manager or to log off. When the admin that cannot log in arrives at the black screen, task manager can run explorer only if it is started with the admin token. The other admi...

Vista Will Not Let Administrator Create Folder In Root of System Volume?
I just had my first encounter with Vista, and it was ugly. Logged in as local administrator, I am not able to manually create a folder in the root of the system volume. What gives with that? Administrator is surely in the DACL for the root of the volume with Modify privileges. I then took ownership of the volume and gave it to Administrator - taking away from the TrustedInstaller ...

Vista privlidges and VB6
Gents (and ladies if there are any here), prepare for a challenge. First, I am cross-posting this to what I think is the appropriate Vista group because I think we as VB 6 programmers could learn some techniques (or vice versa) if there is indeed an answer to this delimma. As a side note, I am dyslexic and I try to catch my spelling errors but always seem to miss some, so please forgiv...

I have a new Dell E520 that is running Vista Business. When I try to print a document in Adobe reader 8 , DEP keeps shutting down the program. I've gone into the advanced tab and tried to put exe file on the exclusion list. Windows advises that the program must run with DEP turned on. What can I do to fix this? ...

Moving a Hard Drive from 2K to Vista
Hello; I have a new machine on the way that is running vista business. I need to physically move 2 windows 2000 small business server EIDE drives into the new machine. Accessing an Encrypted File
I had a excel spreadsheet which contained financial information on my computer. I reformatted my computer and moved the spreadsheet to a small partition on my HDD for the reformat. Now with the new installation of Vista, I am locked out of my spreadsheet (oops). I had the cd that has some sort of access codes on it or something, but I think that may be with Bitlocker and not the encrypt...

AVG Free Problems
I'm running Home Premium with AVG version 7.5.472 and virus base 269.8 17/850. I've run this for quite some time without problems and have made no changes but I now keep getting a "red error state" advising that I have a new priority update ready in update manager. I have downloaded the update both manually (click on update) or with the auto settings and I keep getting update successf...

Defeating Keystroke Logging Programs ?
Hello everyone, I came across someone's idea (printed below) on how to defeat keystroke logging programs, it seems like a good idea. What do you all think ? Is there another perhaps better way ? Other than keeping your antivirus and antispyware up to date, of course. Also, what about on screen keyboards ? (Ie. type osk.exe in the "run" menu) Are they effective ? Here, you don't ...

How Vista determines to move a file to VirtualStore?
Hello all, I had read and understood (i guess) about the new security restrictions in Vista. But I could not figure out the reason why and how Vista decides to move a file to virtual store!
