security center
security center is telling me that windows defender is switched off, and
keeps warning me about this, however defender IS running, icon present in
systray, and scans correctly. when clicking on the 'turn on now' button in
security center, nothing happens and still security center states defender is
not running. help please anyone!! :)

Strange Display Issues
I tried to switch my wallpaper to a different image, and it stretched the
image to fit the screen. Even when I go into the personalize section and
change it to centered, it doesn't have any effect. I've tried changing my
display size from 1440x900 to 800x600, but no change (the image I tried to
change to was 800x600). So I tried a 100x100 size image, and it stretched

How to show the "Schedule Taskes" folder of other computer.
In above version of Windows (Xp, 2000 etc). We can found two special items of
a network computer. (Printers and Schedule Taskes).
But now, in vista, we can not found the "Schedule Taskes" in the windows
explorery, if we access a network computer.
How to show it. I want run it thoght intranet. But now, we must remote login
on this computer to start it.

15 minutes to shut down
About one month ago my computer started to shut down slowly. I am able to get
to the "shutting down" screen quickly, but then the computer hangs for 15
minutes or so. I am not sure how to fix this. One really odd thing that I
noticed is last week I did a windows update and downloaded some patch for
Windows Media Player. The next several times I shut down it was very quick.

Bubbles screensaver problem
I have loaded Vista on my Dell laptop and all works fine except the
bubbles screensaver.
Instead of the bubbles floating over the desktop it changes to a white
background with the bubbles floating around.
Is there some way I can get the desktop to show in the screensaver?
Any help appreciated.

5 minutes to boot if there isan USB drive
Hi,
my Vista computer can takes more than 5 minutes to boot if I have an USB
hard drive connected.
if I unplug it before starting the computer then I boot quickly.

Has anyone used Tornado?
I just purchase a file transfer device called Tornado (30 days to try it).
It looks somewhat like a two ended tape measure where you pull USB cords out
to attach to two computers to transfer files. Here's my question (which the
instructions and web site don't seem to answer). Can I transfer files from
as XP computer to my Vista HP computer? My hope is to transfer files from

System Restore
Anyone know of any free software that does the same thing that windows system
restore does? I just can't count on windows system restore because I keep
getting corrupted restore points. I flushed out all my restore points on 7/4
and today tried to restore to that date and it didn't work. I don't know how
that restore point got corrupted that fast.

Power settings NEVER stick!
The power settings for the monitor always turn it off after 20 minutes even
when I set it to 1 hour. I have to reset it to 1 hour EVERY day because of
this and it still doesnt hold! Why is that?...

Loses wireless when coming out of standby - must reboot
This is an ordinary e1405 core duo with 2GB RAM, Vista Home
Premium, and nothing unusual. It's worked perfectly for months.
Suddenly, its wireless network functionality has become a
problem. When it comes out of standby it may or may not connect.

How to create new contact group
OK, I have an Dell OEM version of Vista with Windows Mail.
Far prefer Outlook but the HUGE annoying thing with Windows Mail is that the
Windows Address Book is no longer and it is just a list of contact files in a
folder structure.

scanners manufacturer list
time ago(during beta times) my HP 5370 usb scaner was detected but not
installed
now with RTM it is installed but not functional i can't use it
trying to force a new device install, in manufacturers list only ONE (XEROX)

Photo Screen Saver Crash - FIX That should Work for you too!
As I state din some other threads, I have had the same problemn as many where
the Vista photos screen saver crashes upon use.
This was not the case when I got the machine.
Well, After a long time trying to figure out how to fix this, I did.

I want to change from Vista to XP Home or XP Pro
When my laptop had to be replaced, it was replaced with Vista. I hate it!
It is incompatible with too many of the programs I use. It wouldn't even
accept my paid for anti spyware, etc. I have the CD discs for both XP Home

Chkdsk in VISTA
I cannot run error checks in the gui (has to lock drive msg)
It schedules but does not run at startup (doesn't even attempt).
Cannot defrag (as chkdsk is scheduled).
fsutil shows 'dirty disk' but I cannot do anything to resolve this.
This is Vista,.. not xp sp whatever.
Same issues after installing diskeeper... same msgs from both dk and native
tools.

Trend Micro Crashed Vista
Vista can run "Trend Micro AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware" (or so they
say...) but NOT "Trend Micro AntiSpyware" by itself. I recieved this
information (via heated phone call) of course too late. Their website
does not state this clearly at all and they haven't as of yet changed
