windows 2000 migration to sbs 2003
I am migrating a Windows 2000 Server to a new machine running SBS 2003 Premium. The Windows 2000 server also runs SQL 2000 for our business application and I am concerned about any problems I might have with SQL when I run dcpromo on the old Windows 2000 Server (removing it as a Domain Controller to a Member Server). Has anyone done this before? I hope to continue to use SQL 2000 on this...

domain controller won't gracefully demote
I have two SBS 2003 domain controllers. We just brought DC 2 into the domain with dcpromo, everything went fine. Transfered all 5 FSMO roles to it DC 2 (ntdsutil verifies this) including global catalog server to. Now I want to demote DC 1, but it gives me an error something like "cannot locate another domain controller". On DC 2 I can see all the DNS and Active Directory objects have...

NT 4.0 to Win2k3 ???
Can someone give me some advice ??? How do you go from NT 4.0 to Windows 2003 ??? We have a simple environment - an NT 4.0 PDC, and a BDC. We have a domain that we are currently using, lets call it OLDDOMAIN. We have a newer server that I am wanting to load Win2k3 on it. I want to make it a new domain, called NEWDOMAIN. Over the course of time, we have had a lot of "dead"...

Hardware Wizard
Hey. I re-installed Windows XP, which seems to be the root of numerous problems. The main one is that my Hardware Wizard used to install stuff, for instance, I'd plug in my webcam, and I'd click "Install the software automatically (Recommended)". And then it would search for a bit, and install it, and it would work. Now when I try and do this, it says "The hardware was not install...

EFS blocking users from accessing their encrypted files
When we upgraded the server from Server 2000 to 2003 there were some user documents that were encrypted (not sure if before or after the upgrade). The users are now unable to decrypt the files, copy or even read them, and even though I took ownership of one of the files (as a test) as the domain admin, neither can I. The error message when trying to decrypt is: "An error occurred applying...

move Windows 2003 server to a different hardware
I am trying to move Windows 2003 server to a different hardware by restoring the backup of the Windows 2003 server to a different hardware. After finishing the restoring, I am trying to run winnt32.exe from CD to fix HAL mismatches. As the restoring makes the Operating system having Windows 2003 with SP1, I cannot run winnt32.exe from OEM CD because the Windows version is newer than...

Transfer FSMO roles
I am going to transfer FSMO roles to a different DC. But before I start to do this, I have a few questions: 1. What do I need to concern about during this process? 2. When is the best time to transfer FSMO roles? Will this process affect anything such as users, file access, etc...? 3. How long will it normally take to finish? We only have one domain with all FSMO roles and GC on on...

Moving users to new SBS 2003 server
My current Windows SBS 2003 SP1 server is no more. I have a new machine with Windows SBS 2003 R2 coming to replace it. My users only use Exchange for scheduling, all of their email is obtained from an external POP3 directly to their workstations. So all of the users' Exchange data is available on their workstations and is actually more recent that the data on the server. All recent b...

I currently have an active directory with a parent domain and one child domain. Half of the users in the child domain are splitting off from the company and the requirements are to put them in a new child domain, but still under the same parent. I have read ways to do this with a single domain, but was wondering how to do this with a child domain. Profiles, policies, etc., I can recreate m...

Migrate Workstations to New Domain and File Server?
We will be rebuilding a Windows SBS domain and changing both the domain name and the name of the server used for sharing both printers and files. It is all one physical machine since it is SBS. What is the most efficient way to update the workstations to work with the new domain? I guess we can use USMT and to move user profiles, but the mapped printers, paths to network shares, Exchange ...

Moviing RAID Array
I have 2 almost identical Dell computers, one with a 3 SATA Disk RAID Array, the other without RAID. Windows is doing the RAID, no hardware RAID controller. The OS drive on the RAID computer died. Create Migration Log without running MSDSS?
We are planning a migration from Netware 5.1 to a native Windows environment. We've been operating both in parallel for some time now, and the decision was made to phase out Netware by migrating all file servers to Windows as well. However, we already have user accounts for all of our employees, accounts with corresponding exchange mailboxes. As such, we assume we can't use MSDSS since it ...

NTFS Security Migration
Hi, Our client currently have two AD forest, A and B. Data will be copied from forest A to forest B with third party software to preserve NTFS security. After moving data, ACL on folders and subfolders in target domain will look like domainA\groupname. Using ADMT with SID to migrate global groups, I wonder if ACL on folders and subfolders in target domain will look like domainB\groupnam...

Windows 2003 Standard to EE

How to remove deleted acct SIDs from many ACLs?
Hello! We are in the process of moving much data from one network storage to another. We are having a problem w/ our copy process (robocopy) when it encounters a SID in the ACL of a folder. (The SID represents an account that has been deleted from AD, but this little bit of info remains in the ACL of folders on servers.) When it comes across one, the permissions are changed to Everyone/...
