AD Upgrade DNS Problem
Here is what we did in a lab scenario to prepare for our AD upgrade
from NT4.
We configured a Windows 2003 server as a member of the NT4 domain. We
configured the server as a DNS server for the domain. We then
upgraded the PDC to Windows 2003 and pointed it to the DNS server for
DNS. It completed the upgrade and registered all the AD zones in DNS
except the ForestDnsZone and the DomainD...

Setting up website on my DSL
I have windows 2003 server, on a new computer. I formally ran a very lightly

I have the Qwest-provided 2wire modem, a static IP, dns service from
dyndns.com and my geewhizbang.com domain is still valid and attached to the
correct dyndns nameservers, and t...

DNS issue with CNAME/secondary replication in non ADI zones
I've found what appears to be a bug(?):
Primary is a non AD integrated zone. Zone contains a CNAME record that
points to another domain.
Secondary will not load the zone.
Remove the CNAME record from the primary. R&R secondary zone record and the
zone transfer is successful. Readd the CNAME record on the primary and the
change replicates.
Problem exists on both NT2003 and NT2000.

DNS Subdomain problem
We have a DNS server that is also DC.
We have domain.net (standard primary type) forward zone which is working OK.
We created subdomain for DC (Active directory-integrated primary type) as a
new forward zone.
subdomain.domain.net.
Only our DNS server can resolve subdomain's names.
Forwarders for all zones are set to our ISP.
Where is the problem, that other DNS servers can't resolve ...

DNS for users that use VPN to let outlook connect to Exchange server
OK, let me see if I can get this right, I'm a newbie at DNS.....
We are using Dynamic DNS with AD integration. We use Cisco VPN and
Client, NOT microsoft VPN. So when a user boots their laptop,
connects to their ISP, runs the VPN client and connects to VPN they
received a 192.168.x.x ip address. Now what happens is when they run
Outlook and connect to the Exchange server that 192.168.x.x...

Migrate Microsoft AD integrated DNS to BIND - HELP Needed
I have recently configured a Linux server with BIND 9.3.3 to act as
the DNS for a small internal LAN running a Win2k3 Active Directory. I
know the pros/cons of running a non-microsoft DNS already.
I verified correct configuration of BIND by running dcpromo on a test
server. The DNS test passed and all the special subzones were updated
with the AD SRV records.
My problem is that I am tr...

Problems with DNS-replication and DNS Event ID 4515
Hello everyone.
I got the event ID 4515 and I've been reading
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/867464 a few times now.
The subdomain doesn't replicate the contoso.com zone but I'm a bit unsure
how to see what zone to delete. Looking on one of the DC's in the subdomain,
the CN=MicrosoftDNS,DC=ForestDNSZones, DC=contoso, DC=com has a zone with

DNS not resolving anymore, but not crashed
Hi
Everything worked fine for years and now I got this strange problem. We have
2 DNS servers for our domain. Both are forwarding the unresolved requests to
our internet gateway server. This server also runs a dns server but doesn't
have zones defined and only forwards everything to our ISP-DNSes. (By the
way, all servers are 2003 R2 SP2).
Now the problem is, that this gateway-dns serv...

Non FQDN queries failing
Our Windows 2000 SP4 DNS servers return a reply code of "Server Failure (2)"
if a non fully qualified query is sent to them. This was never an issue in
the past, since all clients had the Primary DNS suffix assigned via AD. We
now have a 3rd party appliance that is trying to do DNS queries based on just
hostnames, and the queries are failing. Is there any way to tell the Windows

Allow non-administrator to update Primary zone

How do I let a non-administrator update a single Primary DNS zone? In this
case, adding the account to the DNS Admins group doesn't apply.
This is a Windows 2000 Server. It is part of our Active Directory domain,
but the zone in question is a standalone Primary, not AD-integrated. For
this reason, the method given in the DNS whitepaper at

Primary and Secondary vs. two primaries
I’m trying to harden our DNS servers. I currently have 2 servers (ns1 and
ns2). Ns1 is primary and ns2 is secondary. Neither are AD integrated.
I know that a secondary zone server only maintains a limited copy of the
zones and queries the primary for other information. So if the primary goes
down, it seems that the secondary is somewhat useless.
Do you see any downsides to having n...
