New DNS Setup
We are wanting to configure DNS on a windows 2003 server which for testing
will also be hosting an apache website.
I have the appropriate mappings configured on my firewall and can access the
site via IP from the outside world. I have installed the DNS service and
configured a new primary zone named mydomain.net (using my real domain name,
obviously). I have created an alias (CNAME) cal...

Client DNS
We are running SBS 2003.
Recently, our business has changed DSL providers and received a new set of
DNS numbers. I set them in the DNS forwarding area of the server and
everyone should be able to go anywhere on the internet, but some sites won't
come up. When I do an "ipconfig /all" it shows our server is the only DNS
server set. DNS is supposed to be assigned to the clients through...

netlogon.dns question
DNS novice here, who is trying to gain more insight.
I have 3 AD integrated wk23 DNS servers.
Replication appears to be working (they all have the same serial number),
but the modified date on the netlogon.dns file on all 3 servers is different.
Is that a problem?
Thanks

Second DNS server in AD environment
I have a simple single domain AD environment, call it
'companya.abc.xyz.com'.
Originally I built the domain with a single DC that has all of the roles. I
had installed DNS on this server to support the AD environment. The DC
forwards everything it does not know about to the DNS servers for
'abc.xyz.com'. In other words, it only manages the 'companya.abc.xyz.com'
zone.
Since then I ...

Looking for info about scavenging Server 2003
Good Day,
I am looking for some info on scavenging DNS records. Here is my issue. I
have setup a Sonicwall and pointed it at our internal DNS server so that
when a computer goes to a web site I can see who or what the computer is
doing. It worked but I noticed that my computer name or IP address was off
after I looked at it. It seems that I have multiply listing of old IP

General DNS question
This is a very simple question about DNS, but I just need some
verification. If you're changing colocation facilities, are the
nameservers registered with the registry (the ones returned by a
'whois' query) for that domain name what the DNS system uses to decide
where to look for the authoritative DNS entry for that domain? I ask
because we're moving 20 or so servers (with many more registe...

CNAME?
Hello,
I have a Jobs Board set up on www.jobamatic.com
that has a URL of http://usability.jobamatic.com/a/jbb/find-jobs . I
want to use my own domain name and jobamatic says that I can do that
so
that the URL would look like www.jobs.usernomics.com .
Jobamatic's suggestion is to do a CNAME setup so I can use my own URL.
However, my ISP said that doing so would result in occasional err...

DNS round robin and Apache Server
Hi all !
We have a web application that is hosted on Apache HTTP server.
Now we decided to make the application more scalable so we'll replace
the single Apache server with a farm of 3 Apache Servers.
So now I need to load-balance the client requests between the 3
Apache Servers.
Is it enough if I configure DNS round-robin so that, given a domain
name, it will distribute the load bet...

Sub domain - Windows Server
Hi there,
I am not using a hosted server (Windows 2003), but my own server with
a static IP. I would like to have a subdomain that maps to a
particular directory. Could you please advise on how this could be
done?
My domain is registered with GoDaddy and I believe they support
subsomains... however, I believe this would work only if I hosted it
on their website...
Thanks!

Domain name - static IP mapping?
Hi,
I have a domain name and a static IP. Right now, I simply forward the
domain's requests to the IP.
However, this means that the address bar shows the IP AND NOT the
domain name.
I would like the user to see: http://www.mydomain.com/myfile.html
INSTEAD of
http://203.11.1.1/myfile.html.
My server is Windows Server 2003...
How do I do this?
Thanks!

Workstations Not Registering
Windows 2000 Server Small Business Edition (DNS is AD Integrated and only
secure updates are allowed): Moved everything from one physical location to
the next, reinstalled OS on server (SBE 2000), joined clients to domain.
Clients show up in ADUC within the Computers container, but not within the
forward lookup zone in DNS. The only host record to show up is of the DC
itself...Any ideas?...

Here is the scenario:

forests across a WAN link - people in B need resolution for names in A -
intent is to keep the traffic on the WAN link to a minimal level
Which option will work OR is best suited from a traffic perspective:
- Create a stub-zone in B for A's domain
- Conditional forwarding is setup in B...

Redundant servers for mail relay

We have a variety of SMTP enabled apps that currently deliver mail via one
of our internal Exchange servers, lets call that machine "smtpgateway1".
If "smtpgateway1" fails we would like to be able to redirect these apps
with a minimum of effort to another Exchange server which we'll call
"smtpgateway2". Unfortunately these are simple apps and they do not

password) to log on to either domain.

Reverse zone - one zone or multiple zones ?
Hi. We are currently setting up a reverse lookup zone(s) on our Windows
2003 DC(s) which also hosts DNS. Our network contains mainly 2000, XP
clients with 2000 & 2003 servers Our network is of small-medium size with
5-10 subnets e.g. 205.1.1.x to 20.1.1.20.x/24
If possible could anyone advise whether we should create individual reverse
lookup zones for each subnet ie. 205.1.1.x, 205....

Removing one DNS server halts all internet resolution
I have an old (and dying) W2K server with DNS on it. I have two others
(W2003 server) also with DNS. They're AD integrated. The W2K server was the

Anyway, if I remove DNS from the old W2K server, internet name resolution
for the company stops - the other two DNS servers don't seem to know how to
pick up and carry the torch.
I'm missing something...
