DFS guide
can someone provide me an article how to set up DFS with W2003? I found an
article for R2 but I'm running Win2k3 SP2. My problem is that how to create
a link. When creating root I selected a local existing folder c:\documents
then DFS made it shared. When creating a new link I put name as Sales then
selected the Documents share. DFS created a unshared folder under

Bad DFS Referrals
I have one site that is getting bad DFS referrals.
The referrals have always worked correctly but in the last two months the
bad referrals outnumber the correct ones. The site costing hotfix
(KB905846) is loaded but I reinstalled it just in case and restarted the
server. The client failback hotfix is also installed on all PCs.
For a while a restart of the DFS server would solve...

DFS/File Replication Service and SBS 2003 for branch offices
Hello, and pardon me if this has been asked already elsewhere.
I have a client who has an SBS 2003 server at his company's HQ. His company
has a branch office with about 3 users that connect their PCs to the remote
server via a persistent hardware VPN connection. The connection works fine;
users can login directly to the domain. However, the branch users say it is
somewhat slow to ac...

I want to use DFS-R to replicate files between sites over the WAN...
I am running Win2K3SP2 on my File Server. I see everywhere that you just
run the setup off R2 Disk 2 on a Win2K3 SP1 box.
I can run this on a Win2K3SP2 box, no problems, right...?
Will I have to reapply SP2 after the R2 upgrade...?
Thanks,
Tom...

Access Denied Error from VPN
Hello:
I have DFS-R setup with a namespace of \\domain.com\Departments. Under
Departments are folder referrals for the individual Department folders. The
network has three sites (as defined in AD). There is also a good degree of
VLANing. The VPN comes in on its own VLAN and currently does not have an AD
site associated with it.
I have two issues with accessing the referrals.

NTFRS to DFS-R
We have all together 4 servers, apart from these 2 servers are in main office
and rest of the 2 servers are on two different remote offices.
I have all together more then 150 DFS Links and apart from that around 25
links replicating data between servers with custom replication topology 24/7.
Explanation: Total 4 servers, 150 DFS Links, 25 DFS Link Targets use NTFRS

The DFS Management GUI
General observations after (eventually) successfully deploying DFS R2 over
the last month :-
DFS in general - good, and infinitely better then the previous incarnation
which we seldom touched because... well, it didn't work. Nice
REPLICATION - excellent Wizard to setup replication and very efficient
operation, certainly on the site I have just implemented. The odd hiccup
around event log...

DFS Limits on subfolders - namespaces and replication
So I want to use DFS to share the entire documents repository of a small
organization (40 person non-profit) between 2 sites. I'm a bit confused
about limits both on the domain-based namespace and for replication.
I saw another post that said that the 5,000 folder limit on domain based
namespaces isn't really about sub-folders - it's about root folders.
Then I saw another post about r...

Struggling with the concept of referrals.
4 AD Sites, North, South, Central, HQ.
A file server at each site servicing users at those sites.
An additional Server at HQ used as a Core DFS server. File shares from all
sites (including its own) replicate here for fault tolerance and backup
purposes.
I want users at HQ to be referred via DFS to the original HQ file server.
I thought I could do this by going to the Namespace / Namespa...

I'm having a strange problem:
I want to enumerate all my DFS Links. I have 3 DFS roots (root1,root2,root3)

DFS change in Server 2008
Hi,
are there any enhancements to DFS in Server 2008 compared to Server
2003 R2? Maybe performance improvements in DFS-R, support for more
than 1 TB of data per server or anything else?
I can't find any documentation on that, but maybe someone here
knows...
Thank you,

We are currently in a middle of an NT to AD migration. The issue is data has
been consolidated from the servers to DFS with NT credentials because the

The DFS servers are in the AD domain so there is no need to migrate them. All
the NTFS permissions are pointing to the NT user account instead of the AD

But the first server already has several gigabytes of files which I
want to replicate across to the other server, but they did not move

DFS-R Common Staging Folder
We are replicating many folders on a server inside one volume. I'd like to
move the staging folders to a different volume. But instead of manually
creating a seperate staging folder for each replicated folder, what would be
the effect of having a single common staging folder for all replicated
folders, as long as they're in the same replication group?
