Isolating server from wide area network
I have a small network in my office. It connects to the internet via a Linksys BEFSR411 router (with a cable modem on the WAN port). Given the faster speeds of Gigabit for transfering files, I have a neatgear Gigabit switch connected to the uplink port on the Linksys router and have 3 machines connected to the Gigabit switch. All is well with the network and internet connections. I w...

Forcing XP clients to use one route for F+P and another for web
Hi All At my site, I have 2 VPN links to our head office using 2 routers (Router A and High Speed Router B). Router A is the router I would like XP clients to use for the internet. High Speed Router B is for all other File + Print etc. I have tried adding both gateways in the TCP/IP set up on the XP clients (Router B metric=5, Router A Metric=10). This gives me good speed to the oth...

VPN IPSEC

setup an isolated wireless network
Hi, I have a class B network, which has 1 firewall to access internet. I want to setup a wireless network which will be used by anyone to access internet, but here is my problem. I have no choice to plug wireless router to my network, (can't plug it in to switch outside firewall due to location) to allow it to access internet. - I don't want wireless users who will be accessing this rou...

Unable to Ping WXP Machine on LAN
I have two PCs on the same LAN. One is Windows 2K and the other WXP Pro. I can "see" the WXP box through Network Neighborhood, but I CANNOT PING it, either by hostname or IP address. I CAN PING the W2K machine from the WXP Machine. Firewall is disabled on the WXP machine and there is no third party application running. NETBIOS over TCP-IP is enabled and Computer browser service is running...

WinXP Firewall vs. Vista Firewall.
What was the *technical* justification for re-designing Vista FW (handling outbound traffic)? If MS is considering that monitoring outbound traffic is such a pressing security issue, why aren't we furnished with an appropriate fix for the WinXP firewall via 'Patch Tuesday'? Or, could we expect a security enhancement of the WinXP firewall when WinXP3 is released in the first half of 2...

Network drives won't connect
Ran Network Setup Wiz. a dozen times - each time it said success, but no shared folders on remote computer. My Computer shows network drives. I Guess I Don't Get it.
I have tried endlessly to get this "firewall' to work. Maybe it's a firewall against my attempts! Many access avenues (control panel, admin tools) but each unable to do what I want. Endless lists of cryptic blocked 'things' on varous networks (private, domain, public). But I don't know what they are even after reading the help. My compliments to the help writers. I have an BS in Mechani...

Web Server Behind a Firewall Behind a Firewall
Hi, I have an obscure problem. I hope that this is the correct newsgroup for this item. Apologies if it is not. My problem is this... We sit behind a corporate firewall. We have a fixed IP address which forwards to an internal IP address of 192.168.102.11 with no port restrictions. Because of this, I have added our own firewall / router at 192.168.102.11. Behind this sits our web server....

Is it possible to configure Windows Firewall to trust all traffic from a given IP address?
Hello all, I've been looking through netsh related documentation in regards to the Windows Firewall. I'm hoping that I've overlooked something obvious, but it seems that I have to always specify a port number in the rule when it is created. Is it possible to create a rule that instructs Windows Firewall to accept all traffic from a specific IP address (regardless of port) or do I ne...

hardware VPNS
I have 1 main site with a Windows 2003 server and a remote site with 2 PCs. They both have router/firewalls and a configured VPN that is working. The VPN client software is installed and working. I was advised to use RDP to connect to my main server. My Questions: 1. Since I am using VPN hardware devices does RRAS come into play at all? 2. Are there better methods for logging in to th...

Problem with client behavior after removing domain firewall policy
I have an XP SP2 client that was within an OU which had firewall policies defined. Those policies enabled the firewall with a list of allowed applications and ports. Now, I've moved this client to an OU which has the firewall settings set to Not Configured. I also manually deleted all exeptions from the list and confirmed that the registry defines no AlowedApplications. I did all of this ...

Any way to lower my XP connection speed to one megabit?
I know this sounds crazy but there are a lot of web developers at our company that would like to "on the fly" change their connection speed. While there are other options such as setting up an external network connection for each user going through a normal ISP connection or we could do quite a few things to make our network less secure, I'd like to create a button or use an app that wou...
