Scan Performance
"Kevin Young" <ky_nntp[ at ]msn.com> 23.06.2007 21:20:12
I've stopped using One Care because it seems to take forever to do a scan
during a tune-up. I have never timed it but often I have just cancelled a
tune-up after it has been running for a few hours. While the defrag takes
some time the actual scan seems to take forever and I'm wondering if the way
Windows Mail\Windows Live Mail stores each message in an individual file
could be the cause? I would be interested in hearing others experience with
this. How long does it take you to do a typical scan using One Care?

Thanks Steve, I'm sure it is taking longer than that on my laptop but I
haven't timed it exactly as often I just let it run and go to bed for the
night. I'm running on a 2 GHz T43 ThinkPad with 50 gig of programs and data
on an 80 gig hard drive. I'm running under Vista Ultimate. Are you running
Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail?

I decided to try out the Nod 32 30 day free trial, a deep level scan of the
drive took 42 minutes but the interesting thing is that 10 of those minutes
were spent on the Windows Live Mail directories. The Windows Live Mail data
directory has just under a gig of data. I have the same groups and accounts
set-up in Thunderbird and scanning the Thunderbird data directory took about
1 minute. This seems to prove out what I suspected and I bet that 10
minutes is turning in to 20 - 30 additional minutes when using One Care.

The computer I use OneCare on has 4 by 250 Gig platters and so I anticipate
any scan to take a while.

My present working method is/was to leave the machine running overnight.
